Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA)
Who takes the PSSA tests?
In 2013-14, students in grades 3-8 are assessed in Mathematics and Reading. Grades 4 and 8
are assessed in Science and Grades 5 and 8 are assessed in Writing. In 2014-15, an English
Language Arts (ELA) assessment will replace the Reading and Writing in grades 3-8.
What does the PSSA measure?
The PSSA is a standards-based, criterion-referenced assessment used to measure a student's
attainment of the academic standards while also determining the degree to which school
programs enable students to attain proficiency of the standards. The assessment measures the
student mastery of the grade level content standards aligned to each subject.
How long does the PSSA take to administer?
Each section of the PSSA is about 60 minutes in length. The PSSA Reading, Writing, and
Mathematics tests each have three sections. The PSSA Science test consists of two sections.
While 60 minutes is the suggested time for administration, students may receive extended time
if necessary to complete the assessment.
How many times a year is the PSSA administered?
PSSA tests are given one time per year annually during the spring during a window specified by
PDE. This calendar of dates is published on the PDE and NPSD websites.
How does the district use the results from the PSSA?
Schools use the PSSA results to determine areas of strength and need overall and for individual
students. This analysis informs the attainment of mastery of state standards, planning of
interventions for struggling students, enrichment opportunities, and progress monitoring of
growth in achievement. In addition, the PSSA results are used to monitor curriculum alignment
and instructional practices in order to inform curriculum and professional development.
How is the PSSA score reported?
PDE provides individual student scores and reports to parents in the fall following the spring
assessment window. These reports provide overall scaled scores and proficiency levels as well
as scores for each content strand.
Where can I access my child’s PSSA data?
PSSA reports are sent home when received from PDE. Beginning with the 2014-15 school year,
PSSA data will be available through the Home Access Center (HAC) system. All parents can
request an account for HAC using a current email address.
