T he 2015-2016 school year is off to a wonderful start. With over 425 students enrolled this year at Sunrise Elementary, our classrooms are filling up and great learning is taking place. Sunrise serves children from Kindergarten through grade 5 and their families. As usual, we have quite a few students new to Sunrise and I’ve enjoyed getting to know many of these students and their families. This year, we began with a school-wide focus on treating others well. Our students have a clear understanding of the big three expectations we value at Sunrise: Respect, Responsibility, and Safety. I’ve had the unique privilege of watching and listening to students respond to these expectations and share their importance with others. Our classroom teachers have done a fantastic job establishing great routines and expectations to help students be successful each day. One major focus this year will be our work at each grade level during strategic intervention. Strategic intervention is a 30 minute block each Monday-Thursday where every classroom is flooded with extra teacher and para support for an additional level of reading instruction. With consistent planning, professional development, and intentional implementation, we are confident that our students will make great strides in their reading progress. One of the most exciting parts of my day is the moment students walk through our doors. With several staff members waiting to greet them and classroom teachers welcoming them, I see kids that are excited to be at school and can’t wait to get started with their day. At Sunrise, our goal is to provide an environment and educational experience that enables all students to become successful members of our community through consistent social and academic development. We follow a set of shared values that guide our beliefs about teaching and learning. We believe that all children can learn and deserve a safe, satisfying, and successful school experience. We know that high expectations for student achievement combined with intentional support and intervention will result in academic proficiency and growth. At Sunrise, our focus is to help children learn and grow. To do this, our teaching and professional development must be intentional and purposeful. Cooperation, collaboration, and communication are an important part of our educational success. At Sunrise, we strive to be life-long learners. We believe it is important to model respect and foster a caring school culture where students feel valued and appreciated. Finally, we believe in building partnerships between school, home, and community. Through these shared values and beliefs, students at Sunrise Elementary experience an education that is profound and lasting. At Sunrise Elementary, there are many things to celebrate each day. Our staff members are extremely dedicated to their craft and care about each of our students. We have an outstanding group of parents and community members that spend many hours volunteering. Our strong PTA continually supports our students and staff through events, activities, and a consistent effort to meet needs as they arise. As always, we welcome your participation and involvement in the important work that takes place each day at Sunrise. Together, we can make a difference.
