Course Title: Touch Systems Data Entry
Session Title: Proper Keyboarding Technique
Performance Objective:
Students will gain understanding and practice in proper keyboarding techniques (sitting, feet placement,
hand placement, document placement, etc.) and understand the importance of these techniques.
Specific Objectives:
SWBAT (Student Will Be Able To)…
 Identify key components in the invention and development of the Typewriter/Keyboard
 Demonstrate correct posture and position while conducting data entry
 Display proper care and operation of equipment used
 Research and identify the importance of proper technique
 Identify personal technique challenges and/or those in which they excel
TERMS
 Typewriter-a keyboard machine for writing mechanically in characters resembling print.
 Keyboard-a set of keys, usually arranged in tiers, for operating a typewriter, typesetting machine,
computer terminal, or the like.
 Inventor-a person who invents, especially one who devises some new process, appliance,
machine, or article.
 Christopher Latham Sholes-inventor of the Typewriter.
 Patent-the exclusive right granted by a government to an inventor to manufacture, use, or sell an
invention for a certain number of years.
 Prototype-the original or model on which something is based or formed.
 Timeline-a linear representation of important events in the order in which they occurred.
 Placement-the act of placing.
 Ergonomics-the applied science of equipment design, as for the workplace, intended to maximize
productivity by reducing operator fatigue and discomfort.
 Technique-the manner and ability with which an artist, writer, dancer, athlete, or the like employs
the technical skills of a particular art or field of endeavor.
 Checklist-a list of items, as names or tasks, for comparison, verification, or other checking
purposes.

result in the elimination of any or all of the TEKS listed.
130.113. (c) Knowledge and Skills
(1) The student applies the proper keyboarding technique to input data when using the computer.
The student is expected to:
(a) demonstrate correct posture and position while conducting data entry
(b) display basic care and operation of equipment used
Interdisciplinary Correlations:
English-English I
 110.31(b) (1). Reading/Vocabulary Development. Students understand new vocabulary and use it
when reading and writing.
 110.3(b) (11). Reading/Comprehension of informational text/procedural texts. Students
understand how to glean and use information in procedural texts and documents.

 111.32(b) (1) (C). Interpret and make decisions, predictions, and critical judgments from functional
relationships.
Social Studies-World Geography
 113.34(c) (20) (A) Describe the impact of new technologies, new markets, and revised perceptions
of resources.
Accommodations for Learning Differences:
It is important that lessons accommodate the needs of every learner. These lessons may be modified to
accommodate your students with learning differences by referring to the files found on the Special
Populations page of this website.
Teacher Preparation:
 Review and familiarize yourself with the terminology, website links, and proper keyboarding
techniques.
 Have materials and websites ready to go prior to the start of the lesson.

Introduction
Introduction:
The main purposes of this lesson are to help students understand



the history behind touch system data entry (past)
the importance of mastering correct techniques (present)
proper techniques and their relationship to ergonomics (future)
Ask students if they know the history and purpose behind the invention of the typewriter.
Ask students if they know why it’s important to learn correct keyboarding technique when it comes to
document production and personal fatigue.
Have students do the following as pre-testing and record their individual scores on their own…you can
record them, too, as backup.


Online Posture & Technique Quiz (10 questions; score at end)
Technique and Ergonomics Quiz (10 questions; immediate feedback; score at end)

You and students search the internet to find different sources that explain the following:
 Ergonomics
 Common Typing Mistakes
Model for students proper keyboarding techniques and have them follow along with you.
Independent Practice:
 Have students individually practice and apply proper techniques.

Have students go to the following link, keyboard and technique game and do the Keyboarding
and Technique Game.
Summary

Evaluation
Informal Assessment (LSI Quadrant III):
Any and all of the following can be used as informal assessments…
 Check Personal Word Wall Documents
 PreTesting Participation
 Post-Testing Participation
 Keyboard and Technique Game Participation
Formal Assessment (LSI Quadrant III, IV):
The following can be considered a formal evaluation in order to keep students engaged during both the
pre-test(s) s and post-test(s)…
 Pre-Testing and Post-Testing Personal Evaluation (students track and evaluate their scores)
 Pre-Testing and Post-Testing Improvement (is there any improvement in the scoring between
pre-testing and post-testing)
Extension
Extension/Enrichment (LSI Quadrant IV-Extending the lesson):
Have students create their own electronic ‘how to’ guide for proper keyboarding technique. They can
use whatever mode they would like to use (Power Point, Photostory, Flash, Movie Maker, poster board,
infomercial, written/typed report, blog post, etc.) and need to email you their final product.
Have students research and report different types of jobs/careers in the world of ergonomics. They can
use whatever mode (Power Point, Photostory, Flash, Movie Maker, poster board, infomercial,
written/typed report, blog post, etc.) and need to email you their final product.
