A handful of TV stations began to broadcast,
led by RCA’s New York City station, a direct
ancestor of today’s WNBC.
By the end of the year, television was
regularly broadcasting in about a dozen
cities.

accommodate mechanical color.

remote areas of Pennsylvania and
Oregon. Known then as Community
Antenna Television, its function was
simply to bring TV signals into
communities where off-air reception
was either non-existent or poor because
of interfering mountains or distance
