Success Stories May is a month of autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. In both common Western calendrical systems, no other month begins on the same day of the week as May. May and June are the only two months that have this trait. For the June 13, 2011 Board of Education Meeting Recognition of Student/School Success School District No. 67 (Okanagan Skaha) extends congratulations to the following students/groups for these outstanding examples of success for May: Columbia Elementary Student-Led Conferences Columbia Elementary students had the opportunity to share their learning with their parents at the recently held student-led conferences. It was wonderful to see how students were able to demonstrate their growth to their parents and other family members. Columbia’s school inquiry focus is student self-assessment, and it is exciting to see how the students have embraced this important step in their learning. Hearts at School Event At the beginning of May, students at Columbia Elementary enjoyed a morning of moving from station to station, learning about and participating in a variety of healthy activities. With the participation of community partners and volunteers, students learned skills in yoga, skipping, hopscotch, 'boot camp', juggling, and sun safety. Kaleden Elementary Success Stories Kaleden Run The annual Kaleden run was a huge success again this year. They had over 400 grade 4/5’s from all over the district attend. The weather was perfect and the run went off without a hitch. Thank you to the Kaleden Elementary PAC for running the concession and to all the parents who attended as well as helped out at this exciting event. Jake Evans – Hip Hop May away During the month of May the heavy bass and enthusiastic dancers could be heard throughout the school. Jake Evans, a local hip hop teacher did six sessions of dance over three weeks with Kaleden students. Jake has a great rapport with kids and really is great to work with. The students (and teachers) learned a lot about dance. A huge thank you for Jake for all his assistance! April Success Stories Parkway Elementary o The students took part in three school wide runs and the grade 4/5 running team was busy getting ready for the Kaleden run. o The May assembly was a huge success! Everyone really enjoyed Mrs. Morgan's class presentation, Mrs. Tucker's class song and the district choir who performed. It was all excellent! o Parkway held their second to last PAC meeting of the year and they are busy making plans for the fun events coming up in June. o The senior readers from the Concorde once again came and read with the students on Thursday afternoons. o The Breakfast Club and Hot lunch were both big hits! Thank you to Tina and Lindsay and all of their helpers for another super week! o Mrs. Silvius led students and staff in sing-a-long and it was a lot of fun once again. o Check out the Toy lending library for the Kindergarten families on Friday’s! o Four grade 4 and 5 classes have started to practice their track and field skills in order to be ready for the district track meet on June 1st. Penticton Secondary Eyelens Film Festival The film ‘Coming to Terms’ produced by Penticton Secondary student, Alex Greba was nominated for an ‘Eyelens’ Award for Outstanding Achievement in Youth Scriptwriting. Student filmmakers who have won in their category, will be announced at the 16th Annual 2011 Eyelens Film Festival at the Rio Threatre in Vancouver. Dragon’s Den Young entrepreneurs pitched their business ideas to a judging panel to win a share of $2500. in the Windward Software Young Entrepreneurs Dragon’s Den Competition. The event began three months ago when middle and high school students began developing their business before presenting it. The final task is to present a marketing plan. The cash prize will be distributed to the top three teams of middle/high school students which they can use to launch their new business. The competition involves a three-way partnership with Okanagan College’s students in free enterprise, School District No. 67 and Penticton Economic Development Services. National Debate Championships Congratulations to our Junior Debater - Linda Worden - who has attained top honours at the National Debate Championships in Estevan, Saskatchewan. Linda began debating this year and has won at the provincial level and has been named the top junior debater for BC! Track & Field Provincials The Track & Field students had a very successful weekend in Burnaby, BC. On the Friday morning the first event was the 4x100m. Brett Flemming, Kent MacArthur, Jake Klan and Kyle Hooper ran well in a time of 48.67. Placing 17th in the Province out of 21 teams. The 4 x 400m relay team also had a great showing! Layne Richardson, ran a 54.5, Kyle Hooper ran 58.5, Jake Plant ran 54.5 and Lucas Hooper ran 53.5. They placed 10th in the province and were a mere 0.9 of a second away from qualifying for finals. They all ran exceptionally well. For individual events here were the best results: Layne Richardson 400m Hurdles 7th place in the PROVINCE! 59.15, Lucas Hooper 400m - 10th in the PROVINCE! – 52.45 Kyle Hooper - High Jump 170cm 17th in the PROVINCE! (grade 9 competing mostly against grade 12 students) Jake Plant 1500m 4:23:01 18th place (new PB by 26 seconds) Kent MacArthur jumped 5.34m, and placed 21st. Chemistry 11 Contest – Thompson River University On May 18th, four students from Pen-High wrote a Chemistry 11 Contest put on by Thompson River University. Solenn Madevon and Julia Veidt were the top finishers from Penticton Secondary school finishing in the 93rd percentile. With 1406 students taking the exam throughout BC it is quite the accomplishment! Dezzy Williams and Mel Girard also had strong showings. Fantastic effort! Penticton Secondary, continued... Success Stories Balding for Dollars – Shave for the Brave One of the Pen High Leadership students Nathania Roy put on an event with (the help of her mom) Paul Mend and Sandra Richardson to raise money for Cancer victims and families. It is called shave for the brave. The goal for the event was originally $1000. they far surpassed their dreams by raising over $12,000!!! Skaha Lake Middle Muscular Dystrophy Carnival and Walk SLMS raised $1714. towards the district-wide MD fundraiser. Thanks to Mr. y and the “Me to We” ggrade 8 leadership p students who put this event on. McElroy Superhero Day Over 6o% of the students showed school spirit by dressing up as superheroes. Success Stories Skaha Lake Middle, continued... Grace Academy The “Me to We” grade 8 leadership students have sponsored Grace Academy, an orphanage for HIV positive children in Zambia, Africa by buying $1000. worth of school supplies for the school they are building. Grade 8 SLMS student, Jaimi Peters travelled to Zambia with her family to volunteer during spring break and presented a slideshow to the student body upon her return. Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup Ms. Irvine’s grade 6 class spent the afternoon cleaning up the shoreline of the retention pond near the Skaha Lake Marina. Data cards were filled out on garbage collected and entered on the national website to track national statistics. Success Stories Skaha Lake Middle, continued... Jazz Coffee House The grade 7 and 8 jazz bands along with the “Thursday Night Jazz Band” performed a fundraising concert in a coffee house style for parents and students. The common area was packed for the show and the concert was well received. Concert Band and Jazz Band The Grade 8 Concert Band and Jazz Band are going on their annual spring tour to Edmonton where they will play three concerts and spend an afternoon at the Alberta Science Centre. Students will also have time to visit West Edmonton Mall and see a movie in IMAX 3D. School Goals Skaha Lake is collecting data to monitor their students’ progress and provide feedback on instructional practices. All classes are completing the Whole Class Reading Assessment and their grade 8 math classes are completing the District Math Assessment. The district literacy helping teachers have created an on-line survey that looks to student attitudes and opinions around the literacy program. All Skaha lake students have completed that survey. Aboriginal Education Program The Aboriginal Education program has organized three significant cultural events for the students. Grade 8 aboriginal students participated in the “Speetlum Dig”, grade 7 students visited Spotted Lake and the Nk’mip Interpretive Centre and the grade 6 students will participate in the salmon release once the lake levels have receded. Uplands Elementary School Sports: Gymnastics with instruction from Manuela Stegmann (BC Gymnastics Association) Success Stories o o Tennis with Joanne Bettauer from Vanchen Sports (in conjunction with Tennis BC) o Cross Country Running with Mrs. Hancock – outstanding performance by Uplands students at both the West Bench and Kaleden Runs o Fun Sports –Tuesday evenings coordinated by parent volunteer, Randy Beauselinck o Mrs. Johnston awarded every member of the Uplands Basketball Team as MVPs o Mini Basketball – now happening for grades 3 and 4 students with Mr. Scotchburn o Grade 5 Playground Leadership Workshop (with Action Schools): An excellent Workshop was held on April 15th to teach students about leading playground activities and grade 5 students are now leading younger students in doing the activities. o o o Music: Mrs. Buzikievich’s grade 2 students and Ms. Street’s grade 3 students both won their events at the Kiwanis Music Festival. Ms. Street’s class performed at the Festival Highlights and Mrs. Buzikievich’s class co-won a trophy with Columbia School. Global Fundraising: Bake Sale for tsunami and earthquake victims in Japan was held on April 20th led by Mrs. MacIntyre’s grade 3 class - $625.00 was raised! The school also raised over $160.00 for the Make a Wish Foundation. Success Stories Hazel Davy Award School District No. o 67 Success: Hazel Davy Award – Janice Clary Hazel Davy was one of the founding members of the Special Education Association. Each year at the Special Education Association Cross Currents Conference, one person is awarded the Hazel Davy award. This year’s recipient was Janice Clary, Learning Assistance Teacher at KVR Middle School and district Literacy Helping Teacher. This award goes to a person who has made a significant contribution in the area of special education. Janice has been a Learning Assistance Teacher in School District No.67 since 1976. Janice has also been an executive member of the Special Education Association of British Columbia. During this time, Janice has been instrumental in increasing awareness in regard to the learning needs of students both district wide and provincially as well as actively making a difference in the lives of the students with special needs in School District No.67. We would like to thank Janice for her hard work and congratulate her on receiving this award.
