For the June 11, 2012 Board of Education Meeting
Recognition of Student/School Success
School District No. 67 (Okanagan Skaha) extends congratulations
to the following students/groups for these outstanding examples of
success for MAY:
Columbia Elementary
Raise A Reader Celebration
Columbia students were so lucky to have a visit to the school by a
variety of published authors, organized through the 'Raise a Reader'
program. Not only did each grade level have the opportunity to
listen to a reading of a book, students learned about the craft of
writing a short story or novel. At the end of the book talk, every
child was presented with a brand new book (written by the author
they had heard speak). What a fabulous day!

PSS Girl’s Rugby Team
Success Stories
Penticton Secondary Girl’s Rugby Team - Students placed 6th in the
AAA BC Provincial Championships! They lost on Thursday, won on
Friday and lost a close one on Saturday. This is much more impressive
than it may seem since every other team in their division was carrying a
roster of at least 25 players and many had as many as 35 or 40. PSS
girls travelled with 18 players and this included 3 so badly hurt that they
could only play a few minutes each game. Since there are 15 players on
the field at a time, virtually all of the girls played 210 minutes of full
contact, no-prisoners rugby in 48 hours against constantly fresh
opposition and never backed down, never slowed down and never stopped
demonstrating to the world the real nature of Laker Pride.
School District No. 67 Speech Competition
The inaugural SD67 Speech Competition hosted by Summerland
Secondary was very successful.
All secondary schools were represented and the level of competition was
remarkable. Judges commented on the high calibre of the speeches and the
poise and confidence all students displayed. The three judges were: Wes
Hopkin (Harvard graduate, Penticton City Councillor and debate
champion), Linda Beaven (SD67 trustee, retired drama teacher and
music festival adjudicator), Charlotte Burley (retired English teacher
and Summerland Rotary representative).
Successful competitors were:
Grade 10
1st Colton Van Camp (Princess Margaret grade 9 student)
2nd Linda Worden (Pen High)
3rd Meike Engel (Princess Margaret)
Grade 11
1st Cassidy Yurechko-Clements (Summerland Secondary)

3rd Dana Klamut (Princess Margaret)
Grade 12

A huge thanks to Jane Stead (competition organizer) and Jeff Guy for

Uplands School Springs into Action
The spring season is in the air at Uplands! The school held an Earth Day
assembly followed by cleaning up the schoolyard and each class
planted beautiful flowers that are now dispersed throughout the school
grounds. Many thanks go out to Giardino’s of Penticton for donating
the flowers and to the Uplands PAC Farm Bag Program for providing
the funds needed for the soil and pots.
Not only are flowers growing, but chicks are hatching at Uplands! The
three kindergarten “maternity wards” have been nurturing eggs and
the results are an opportunity to see the birth of chicks right in the
classroom. What an amazing experience for students!!
