It would appear that his first wife, (unidentified) BREMNER died prior to the commencement of BMD registration, as
she has not been found between 1837 and 1841.
1841: Lived in Waltham Abbey, ESS; with James (25) and William (25) COCKBURN.
1843: Note that his surname is given as "TULLOCH" in the GRO marriage index.
The Reading Mercury of April 22, 1843 has a lengthy article detailing an explosion at the Waltham Abbey Powder Mills
that resulted in seven deaths. Alexander Tulloh was the previous superintendent of the facility. It's interesting to note that
there is mention of Colonel James Cockburn, director of the Royal Laboratory at Woolwich. It is likely that this is either
the same man shown in the 1841 census (or his father, given his age/rank).

1881: Lived at Tannachie, Ledbury, WOR with niece Ada. G. TULLOH, b c 1849, Nova Scotia, and three servants.
According to unverified web sources, Ada Goldsmith WEST was born on Grand Manaan on 13th OCT 1848. Her
parents died in 1853 in Washington, DC, and she was taken into the Protestant Orphan Asylum. Alexander TULLOH,
had married her sister, Mary Louisa WEST, and having no children of their own, sent for her and adopted her as his own
daughter, under the name Ada Goldsmith TULLOH.
The name of his house, Tannachie produces an interesting connection in Fasti Ecclesia Scoticanae, under the entry for
William FALCONAR. He married Elizabeth TULLOCH, eldest daughter of Minister Alexander TULLOCH of
Tannachie, 29 APR 1765. Tannachy, now known as Invererne, is an estate near Forres, Morayshire. Purchased in 1574
from the Abbey of Kinloss by Robert TULLOCH, who was the first Laird of Tannachy, the seventh Laird, Alexander
TULLOCH sold the estate in 1772 to Alexander URQUHART for just over 100 pounds, valued at 1.9 million pounds

today.. In 1817 the estate was sold to General William GRANT, who built the current structure, Invererne House. After
his death in 1832, the estate was sold to Colonel Peter GRANT, who married Mary Ann PETERKIN of Grange, taking
the name GRANT PETERKIN.

"Government of Dominica. -- Among the West India news brought by the Great Western, and published in our last, we
inadvertently gave insertion to the following paragraph, copied from the Morning Herald: - "From Dominica, we learn
that the Lieutenant-Governor had left for England. Mr. James Lang (sic) BREMNER assumed the Government, being
(says a local paper) the first coloured person of Dominica, who had gained the distinction of representing Majesty." It is
likely that this statement has originated in the circumstance of Mr. BREMNER being a native of Dominica, i.e., born in
the island; but he cannot in any sense be called a coloured person, as both his parents were natives of this County, and
well known in Aberdeen. They went to Dominica early in life, where his father, the late Dr. BREMNER, amassed a
handsome fortune, and rose to hold the same office to which the son, Mr. James Laing BREMNER, has now been so
honourably and deservedly promoted. We take this opportunity of correcting what must have appeared, to his many
friends here and elsewhere, a very ludicrous mistake."

"Among the most interesting of those visits, was that of our friend Dugald Stuart Laidlaw, and elderly planter of great
influence in the island, much respected as a liberal patron of education, but one whose habits had long been associated
with the old system. He is a large proprietor, and still larger attorney, and has no less than twenty-two estates under his
care. The valuable information with which he favored us -- entirely of his own accord -- was to the following effect -"that although his present crops were somewhat diminished in consequence of the slight degree of unsettlement, which
took place after the commencement of full freedom, (at the time of planting) he had now no complaint to make -- that the
laborers were working well on their old locations -- that not a single instance of squatting had occurred -- that he was
conducting his estates on the plan of job-work, which was agreeable and profitable to both parties -- that whereas he had
formerly borne the burden of more than two thousand one hundred slaves or apprentices, he now employed only six
hundred free laborers -- that he expected to save money by the change -- and lastly, that he was taking measures for
enlarging the extent of his sugar cultivation."

"The Late Dr. Bruce BREMNER, Edinburgh."
"The death of Dr. Bruce A. BREMNER, of Streatham, Canaan Lane, announced yesterday, will touch a large circle of friends. Born at
Dominica in the West Indies, in 1817, where his father was then acting Governor, he came home at the age of four to live with his relatives
in Aberdeen, where he went to school, and afterwards to the University, graduating as A.M. in 1837. From Aberdeen he went to Edinburgh,
where in 1840 he took the degree of M.D. and the L.R.C.S.E. He was about to enter the medical department of the army, when an offer of
private practice induced him to give up that idea and go to Bombay, where he remained for 13 years, and was twice the recipient of
handsome testimonials. Returning to this country in 1853, he lived for several years in Perthshire, finally settling in Edinburgh in 1863.
During his whole life he engaged in philanthropic and charitable work -- in Bombay taking a leading part in the conduct of the dispensary
there, and during his stay in Perthshire, being connected with Murray's Royal Asylum and local charities. A man of tireless energy, wide
sympathy, and ready hand, Dr. Bruce Bremner will long be missed and mourned."
