Background:
Ø  The Internet and mobile technology is changing how people learn about and
manage their illnesses.
Ø  6 out of 10 Europeans go online to look up health information.
Ø  Little is known about online mental health seeking behaviour in people with
psychosis.
Aim:
Ø  To explore the nature, extent and consequences of online mental health
seeking behaviour by people with psychosis
Ø  To determine the acceptability of E-Mental health technology.

Method:
Ø  Interviews were carried out with people with psychosis (n=22).
Ø  Participants were purposively recruited through secondary care
settings in London.
Main topics discussed:
Ø  Current and historical use of e-mental health information and
technology.
Ø  Interviews were audio-recorded, typed and transcripts were analysed
for thematic content. A team approach was taken to analysis.
Results: Mental Health-related Internet use was widespread.
All participants used
as a search engine.
I can look up the questions I
can’t ask anyone else…
was the most popular source of information.
I went online and it worried
me. I left my meds sitting
there for three weeks…
Most participants did not discuss the information they had found online with their clinicians, feeling that it was private
or that it would undermine the position of their clinician.
Conclusion:
Ø  People with psychosis rely on the Internet to acquire mental health related information and often do not communicate their findings to health care professionals.
Ø  This information can be inaccurate and inconsistent, causing concern, and affecting important health care decisions.
Ø  Further research is needed.
Ø  Introduction of E-Mental health interventions would potentially be well received.
