Dear Prof. Lautzenheiser:
I respectfully request that the enclosed paper – Heat Conduction in a Rod with a Nonuniform Thermal Diffusivity – be published in RHIT Undergraduate Mathematics
Journal. This paper was my research work in the undergraduate independent study from
this January to May at Southeast Missouri State University. This independent study was
conducted under the supervision of Dr. W. Y. Chan who is also the sponsor. This
research paper was motivated by analyzing heat conduction in a given machine which has
a non-uniform thermal diffusivity.
I begin my graduate study this Fall in the University of Kentucky and plan to study
analysis and partial differential equations. I also have a baccalaureate of science degree in
pure mathematics from Southeast Missouri State University.
