§ As one of four vice presidents (academic, business, advancement, student affairs), report to the
President, serve on Executive Management Team and actively contribute to decision making
and planning relative to a wide-range of public and institutional policy and operational matters.
o Represented University to Board of Regents and its staff on matters related to student
financial aid, enrollment, campus safety, residential operations, bond financing, and
mandatory student fees.
o Maintained relationships with local legislative delegation; provide responses to
legislative information requests and work closely with university’s legislative liaison.
o Provided communication, decision making and operational support in response to
reduced state appropriations, institutional and divisional budget reductions, temporary
reductions in employee compensation, elimination/restructuring of academic programs
and faculty bargaining unit relationships.
Hogan 2 o Managed specific initiatives to improve institutional compliance with changing
regulations (e.g. consumer information, Title IX, Clery, Higher Education Act).
§ Led and improved the performance of the Division of Student Affairs.
o Developed mission/vision, strategic plan and assessment program with leadership team;
identified and tracked key performance indicators.
o Hired, supervised and evaluated leaders of campus departments; spurred their
professional growth and improved the performance of their units.
o Developed staff professional development program and established partnership with
Postsecondary Education: Student Affairs graduate program.
o Increased generated revenue, merged functions, reorganized units, negotiated fee
increases, and creatively reduced expenses to address institutional reduction of state
support of 26%. Maintained staff morale and student satisfaction throughout.
o Established new units to support veteran and LGBT* students, and expanded support for
disability services, retention services, student recruitment, counseling/psychiatric
services and financial aid.
§ On behalf of President, led development and functioning of campus-wide Diversity Council and
served as chair.
o Engaged students, faculty and staff in efforts to enhance the diversity of student body
and workforce, ensure a welcoming campus environment for all, eliminate success gaps,
and educate all students on matters of diversity and inclusion.
o Guided creation of Diversity Council, Diversity Advisory Committee, mission/vision
statements, strategic priorities and key performance indicators.
o Led development of annual Diversity Town Hall Meeting, annual Diversity Matters
Awards, bi-annual climate study, mini-grant program, and program inventory.
o Increased multicultural enrollment every year for eight years, from total of 745 to 1123
(+51%), during time of overall enrollment decline of 5%. Multicultural enrollment as a
proportion of total enrollment progressed from 5.9% to 9.4%.
§ Oversaw enrollment management (jointly with Provost since 2014).
o Guided transition from admissions focus to strategic enrollment management approach;
convened academic and administrative personnel from across campus to manage
enrollment via three implementation councils – recruitment, retention, and
data/research.
o Created new efforts to support community college relations, multicultural recruiting,
graduate student application processing, enrollment forecasting, application tracking,
reduction of student debt, recruitment marketing, and cross-campus yield activity.
o Developed position and hired new AVP Enrollment Management.
§ Improved rates of student success.
o Initiated campus-wide self-study of student experience thru Foundations of Excellence.
o Developed Retention Council (with Provost) to implement full range of interventions and
services for all students and targeted efforts for first generation, racial/ethnic minority,
transfer, veteran, LGBT students and students with disabilities.
o Initiatives included MAP-Works early intervention system, ALEKS math placement,
web-delivered sexual assault prevention program, first-generation early orientation
(Jumpstart), “Live Like a Student” financial literacy program, early arrival orientation
(UNI Now), first-year only course-embedded peer mentors, and Cornerstone learning
community initiative.
o Improved first year retention and four year graduation rates.
Hogan 3 § Developed “Community College Relations” initiative.
o Guided intensive self-study relative to the transfer student experience using the
nationally-developed Foundations of Excellence model; jointly appointed (with Provost)
80 faculty and staff to work on six dimensions of self-study and later jointly appointed
Transfer Council to guide improvement.
o Created new staff position as Director of Community College Relations to bolster
relations with Iowa’s 15 community college districts.
o Cataloged and refurbished existing articulation agreements, and developed (with
Academic Affairs) standardized approach to development and approval of new ones.
o Improved working relationships with institutional leaders in Iowa’s 15 community
college districts, generated new partnerships and initiated other improvement efforts
related to transfer student recruitment and retention.
§ Implemented a comprehensive new student information system.
o Implemented student records, registration, billing, financial aid, admissions and
customer relationship management modules of Peoplesoft’s Campus Solutions product
with implementation consultant CIBER, Inc.
o Successfully completed planning and implementation effort, on time and on budget: $12
million, 38 team members, 18-month planning and 30-month implementation.
o Partnered with CIO to implement Oracle Business Intelligence and data warehouse
solution to enhance campus-wide reporting and decision making.
§ Oversaw major construction and renovation projects totaling over $90 million.
o Panther Village Apartments new construction: bonded, 440 beds, $45.5 million, on
time/budget, phase I opened fall 2012 and Phase II opened fall 2013.
o Maucker Union renovations: meeting, event, commons and commercial space, three
projects, $2 million, completed on time/budget.
o Veterans Center and LGBT* Center in student union, $350,000, opened fall 2013, on
time/budget.
o Redeker Dining Center renovation: bonded; convenience store, dining hall, offices,
computer lab, lounge space; $5.5 million; completed fall 2013 on time/budget.
o Lawther Residence Hall renovation: $22 million modernization of historically significant
building, under construction, to open in fall 2017.
o Residence hall upgrading: $3-5 million annually; have completed 8 years of a 10-year
plan to sprinkle all residence halls.
2004-07
Senior Associate Vice President & Dean of Students, Ohio University
Responsibilities as described below (for Dean of Students) with additional responsibilities for division
planning and representation of Student Affairs in University planning.
§ Led institutional response to off-campus student behavioral issues.
o Led adoption of revised alcohol strategy including deployment of BASICS and Prime for
Life as mandated interventions
o Strengthened university disciplinary response with parental notification, “three strikes”
initiative, and communication campaign.
o Partnered with local and campus police, neighborhood associations and city leaders to
improve strategic and tactical response coordination.
§ Achieved cost savings and synergy by merging Student Activities, LGBT Programs, Community
Service and Off-Campus Living to create Office of Campus Life; shifted oversight to Vice
President.
§ Assumed responsibility for opening Baker University Center, a new $60 million facility of
183,000 square feet, in January, 2007 [prior to shifting oversight to permanent director].
§ Assumed responsibility for Student Health Service and initiated critical review aimed at
effectively integrating medical, health education and counseling services.
