UCL CENTRE FOR LANGUAGES & INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION Evening Courses Latin Level 1+ Prerequisite for entry: For beginners and those who have had only very little contact with the language. Term duration: 10 x 2-hour classes Aims and Objectives: The aim of the course is to provide students with basic knowledge of Classical Latin and of the main principles of sentence construction in order to enable them to translate simple passages of Latin prose into English. By the end of the course, the students are expected to have reached a level equivalent to the end of chapter 9 of Lingua Latina Pars I, Familia Romana. Material to be covered: GRAMMAR: Nouns: 1|Page a. First Declension (terra, -ae) b. Second Declension (dominus, -i, puer, -i, ager, -i, donum, -i, vir, -i, deus, -i ) c. Third Declension (ovis, -is, pastor, -is) First-Second Declension Adjectives (bonus, -a, -um, liber, -a, -um, niger, -a, -um) Numerals: unus, una, unum, duo, duae, duo, tres, tria Pronouns: a. the demonstrative pronouns is, ea, id, hic haec, hoc and ille, illa, illud b. the interrogative (indefinite) pronoun quis, quis, quid and interrogative (indefinite) adjective qui, quae, quod c. the relative pronoun qui, quae, quod Verbs: a. The verb sum in the active present indicative b. The active present indicative and imperative of all conjugations SYNTAX: Basic Uses of the Cases Prepositions: ad, ante, apud, circum, in, inter, per, post, prope, sub and supra. Basic Grammatical Constructions: a. Subject – Verb – Predicate Nominative/ Predicate Adjective b. Subject – Verb – Direct Object c. Subject – Verb – Direct Object (Accusative) – Indirect Object (Dative) d.
