Icelandic Level 1

Prerequisite for entry

For complete beginners or those who have had only very little contact with the language.

Term duration

10 x 2-hour classes.

Aims and Objectives

The course aims to provide an introduction to basic spoken Icelandic with emphasis on mastering the specific sounds of the language from the offset, developing practical listening skills; reading simple texts in Icelandic; using a dictionary and understanding grammatical abbreviations; and getting to grips with several grammatical issues. Students should be able to communicate in Icelandic on a number of practical every matters.

Telling the time

Counting, expressing amounts & prices

Asking where people are from and which languages they speak

Expressing intention and activities happening in the present

Expressing possession

Phone numbers

Linguistic Structures/ Phonetics

The definite article for the nominative, singular

Strong adjectives, all genders, nominative, singular

Personal pronouns in the nominative, singular & plural

Possessive pronouns for all genders in the nominative, sing & plural

The 4 main groups of verbs. Emphasis on regular verbs in gr. 1&2

The verbs “að vera” and “að eiga”

Impersonal verb “að finnast”

The vowel-shift a-ö in nouns, verbs & adjectives

Basic word-order, where and how it differs from English

The present continuous & expressing the future with “ætla að”
