Proposal Summary
Explain the purpose for this proposal:
The primary purpose of this proposal is to establish a new course titled Hospitality Meetings Management Lab. Currently,
students enrolled in HM 43043, Hospitality Meetings Management, enroll in a 4 credit class, with 2 credits for lecture and
the 2 credits assigned for the lab experience. The lecture part is being converted into a stand-alone course as described in
another proposal. This proposal is to establish a new lab course that will be taken concurrently with the newly converted
lecture-only HM 43043 Hospitality Meetings Management. The lab will be an optional class that students interested in
practical event management experience can take concurrently with the lecture-only HM 43043. Currently, for the lab portion
of the course, students complete structured rotations totaling 60 hours in various area hospitality establishments including
hotels, country clubs, and conference centers. These labs require a substantial time commitment from various individuals at
the lab properties as students acquire skills in various departments including group sales, food & beverage, front office,
banquet operations, maintenance, etc. The managers at the assigned labs also keep track of student hours and complete
performance appraisals. Although the lab portion offers a great learning environment for students interested in event
management, many properties are reluctant to participate due to the time commitment involved. This has led to the class
being capped at 21 during past semesters when it has been taught as a 4-credit class with 2 lab hours. Several students
have hence been turned away due to the relatively low cap. When the class was offered in spring 2011, five area hospitality
properties served as labs; of those, one property has already declined an invitation to participate in the future due to the
time commitment and scheduling issues involved. Some of the students majoring in Hospitality Management already have
work experience in hotels. For those that do not, the optional course, HM 43044 Hospitality Meetings Management Lab is
made available. Course Learning Outcomes • Experience various event-planning related functions by observing and
participating in related duties at a hospitality property. In-class Activities that Support Outcomes • Students complete a 1
page journal documenting learning experiences after every lab visit. Out-of-class Activities that Support Outcomes •
Complete a rotation of various departments of a hospitality property involved in event management.
Explain how this proposal affects program requirements and students in your unit:
Students majoring in Hospitality Management are required to take 9-12 credit hours of designated professional electives.
This course will be one of the options made available to students to fulfill the professional elective requirement and should
be taken concurrently with HM 43043 Hospitality Meetings Management. Typically, students interested in pursuing a career
in event planning register for this course. Students will be made aware that they have to complete scheduled rotations
totaling 60 hours in the assigned property that will serve as the lab. Students will schedule rotations at the property after
consulting with the property’s manager.
Explain how this proposal affects courses, program requirements and student in other units:
Because this is a Hospitality Management professional elective that students majoring or minoring in Hospitality
Management take, this proposal does not affect courses, program requirements, and students in other units.
Explain how this proposal affects enrollment and staffing:
Enrollment is restricted by number of sites available. Current staffing level meets the needs to offer this course.
