Currently, for the lab portion of the course, students complete structured rotations totaling 60 hours in various area hospitality establishments including hotels, country clubs, and conference centers. These labs require a substantial time commitment from various individuals at the lab properties as students acquire skills in various departments including group sales, food & beverage, front office, banquet operations, maintenance, etc. The managers at the assigned labs also keep track of student hours and complete performance appraisals. Although the lab portion offers a great learning environment for students interested in event management, many properties are reluctant to participate due to the time commitment involved. This has led to the class being capped at 21 during past semesters and several students being turned away due to the relatively low cap. When the class was offered in spring 2011, five area hospitality properties served as labs; of those, one property has already declined an invitation to participate in the future due to the time commitment and scheduling issues involved. Some of the students majoring in Hospitality Management already have work experience in hotels. For those that do not, an optional course, HM 43044 Laboratory Experience in Hospitality Meetings Management (new course), will be offered as a co-requisite along with HM 43043. Currently, the lecture portion of HM 43043 is 2-credit hours. This has not been sufficient to discuss materials in the course outline listed above. A 3-credit lecture course is essential to cover all essential aspects of meeting and event management as listed above in course outline. The writing expectations of the course have also been updated in this proposal. Explain how this proposal affects program requirements and students in your unit: Students majoring in Hospitality Management are required to take 9-12 credit hours of designated professional electives. This course will be one of the options made available to students to fulfill the professional elective requirement. Typically, students interested in pursuing a career in event planning register for this course. https://workflow.kent.edu/ccu/approve.aspx 12/5/2011 Approve Page 3 of 3 Explain how this proposal affects courses, program requirements and student in other units: Because this is a Hospitality Management professional elective that students majoring or minoring in Hospitality Management take, this proposal does not affect courses, program requirements, and students in other units. Explain how this proposal affects enrollment and staffing: Current staffing is sufficient to offer this course. No additional staffing is anticipated.
