ethical issues. Demand/Control schema and Ethics are the focus to prepare students for the national certification test.
Prerequisite: SPED 43100 and SPED 43106; or SPED 53100 and SPED 53106.
Catalog Description (edited): Covers current trends in the field regarding situational and ethical issues. Demand-Control
Schema and the RID Code of Professional Conduct are key components of the students' investigation and application.
Students receive guidance in preparing for the RID performance test.

Discussion of the RID, CPC, EI PA
guidelines, and ethics in general.
Discussion of core and personal
values, personality, cultural identity,
prejudice, bias, ethical framework,
ethical decision making process,
ethical business practices, continuing
professional development, and
Demand-Control Schema.
Goals discussion. What are goals? Why
do we need from them? How do goals
facilitate our goals personally and
professionally? How do we write them
to be effective?
The RID and NIC examination requires
a clear understanding of ethics.
Groups of students will present various
ethical dilemmas and practice
answering in an appropriate NIC
format
A continuation of the RID and NIC
examination. Individuals will be given
practical opportunities to understand
and practice the NIC.
Ethical business practices and
continuing professional development is
required to work successfully in this
field. These two topics will be
discussed at length.
Wrap up and review for the final mock
NIC exam.

papers. Grad students will also have to complete a 10 page research paper on a topic related to interpreting and present
their paper to the class.

Explain the purpose for this proposal:
The purpose of this revision is to update the course content, course description, textbook, writing expectations, instructor
information, and prerequisites in order to keep the course current with practices in the field. Students will 1) understand the
place that norms, values, beliefs, cultural perspective, s and professional conduct plays in the professional interpreter's work
and life. 2) Develop a concept of 'ethical fitness' 3) Apply Demand-Control Schema to ethical decision making. 4) Adapt
language usage to interact cross culturally 5) Make decisions to solve problems and issues quickly 6) Practice and be very
familiar with the RID NIC test and its requirements.
