The Kyle Type PST (Padmount Source Transfer
Switchgear package) is a self contained load transfer device, which provides both automatic load
transfer and circuit fault protection, in a single padmount switchgear unit.
The PST represents the union of several timeproven Kyle products: the S control, which detects
loss of voltage and automatically transfers the load
between the preferred and alternate sources; the
ETC electronic trip control, which provides fault
detection; and the CI vacuum fault interrupter,
which performs three-phase switching and threephase fault interruption.

Automatic Source Transfer
Product Description
HINGED COVER AND
DOORS, provide easy
access to connections
and controls.
The Padmount Source Transfer
(PST) package provides both lossof-voltage and overcurrent protection for critical loads. It features
deadfront source and tap cable
compartments, and a sealed tank,
which houses the switching and
fault interrupting components.
Source Compartment
CONTROL
SOURCE I
The source compartment houses
the preferred and alternate source
cable connections, the controls,
and handles for manual operation.
SOURCE II
(either source can be the preferred)
Tank
Automatic Source
Transfer
All electrical distribution systems are subject to service interruptions and outages; however,
there are many critical loads
which cannot tolerate prolonged
service interruptions. For such
applications, a load-transfer
scheme is used to minimize outage times. In a load transfer
scheme, power is normally supplied from a preferred source and
is automatically switched to an
alternate source, if preferred
source voltage is lost for any reason. Upon restoration of preferred
source voltage the load can automatically be switched back, in
either a parallel-return mode (preferred-source switch closes before
alternate source switch opens) or
a non-parallel return mode (alternate-source switch opens before
preferred-source switch closes).

The parallel-return transfer mode
eliminates an outage when
switching back to the preferred
source; however, the sources must
be in phase.

INDICATORS
The PST tank contains: Six potential transformers, which provide
input to the S-Control to sense
loss-of-voltage; Six current transformers, which provide input to
the electronic trip control, to sense
overload and fault conditions;

which serves as the dielectric

conditions.
Tap Compartment
The Model-6 tap compartment
houses the tap cables and connections.
Optional
Configuration
The PST is designed in the industry-standard Model-6 configuration; however, occasionally two
critical loads must be served, each
independently, from the same
source. To accommodate this
need, the PST can optionally be
designed in a Model-9 configuration. In the Model-9 configuration
the Electronic Trip Control (ETC)
is replaced with two Kyle TriPhase controls, which are located
in the tap-side compartment, each
control operates a separate threephase interrupting VFI. This
arrangement of two Tri-Phase
controls, operating VFI interrupters, provides independent
overcurrent and fault protection
for the critical loads serviced by
each tap.
Kyle Technology
Kyle CI Interrupter
Switching and fault interruption are both accomplished with
Kyle’s, motor-operated, Type CI
interrupters. The CI interrupters
feature Kyle’s long-life, maintenance free, vacuum interrupters,
which assure many years of trou-

When energized, a motor winds
the CI interrupter mechanism to
charge the opening and closing
springs; this provides quick-open
and quick-close operation of the
vacuum interrupters. Each CI
interrupter can also be operated
manually, should control power
be lost. A hot-stick operable lever
can be operated to manually close
or trip the CI, while a hot-stick

operated for manual charging of

for each interrupter.
Type ETC Control
(Model-6 Configuration)
The PST switchgear package
can optionally be equipped with a
Kyle Type ETC control to monitor
the three-phase load. If a fault or
other overcurrent condition is
detected, the ETC control issues a
trip signal to the CI interrupter,

which simultaneously interrupts
all three phases of the load. When
properly coordinated, with upline
devices, the ETC control can
detect and isolate tap-side faults
without causing nuisance operations of the source-side protective
devices.
The ETC control can be ordered
with a remote operation accessory,
for connection to a SCADA system. In addition, the ETC can be
configured to respond to local
input from other transformer protective devices (thermal sensors,
smoke detectors, sudden pressure
relays and secondary ground fault
relays).
Type S Control
Kyle’s Type S control provides
the timing and control logic
required to perform the automatic
load transfer. The S control is a
time-proven user-friendly control.
Simple relay logic and analog
timers assure reliable operation,
ease of installation and quick
troubleshooting. The face of the
control provides visual indication
of the status of each CI interrupter, control settings and manual operation capabilities.
FAULT PROTECTION,
Tri-Phase controls coupled
with VFI vacuum fault
interrupters provide
independent fault protection
for each tap.
The PST switchgear package
can optionally be supplied in a
Model-9 configuration, with two
independent fault protected taps.
Each tap is protected by a Kyle
VFI interrupter, operated by a
Kyle Tri-Phase control. Sensing
CT‘s, mounted internally on each
phase, are used by the Tri-Phase
control to monitor line current. If
the current monitored is greater
than the minimum trip level, the
control begins a user-selected
time-current-curve (TCC) delay
sequence. At completion of the
programmed TCC delay, a signal
is issued to trip the VFI.
The Tri-Phase control is powered by the current transformers;
no external voltage supply or battery backup is required. Since the
Tri-Phase control is powered by
sensing CT‘s, it is not affected by
system voltage conditions such as
overvoltage transients.
THREE-PHASE TRIP,
all three phases trip
simultaneously.
