SEPTEMBER 2009 Mohammed Omran, Chairman, Etisalat Mohammed Omran serves as Chairman of Etisalat – a position he attained in 2005. During Omran’s tenure, Etisalat has attained numerous noteworthy achievements. Since its foundation in 1976, Etisalat has since grown to be valued as one of the largest twenty telecommunication companies worldwide, providing services to more than 85 million people across the Middle East, Africa and Asia. In the company’s home market – the UAE, the mobile penetration rate has now exceeded 200% fuelled by Etisalat’s vast array of services and competitive pricing plans. Under Mohammed Omran’s leadership, Etisalat has received many awards including ‘Best operator in the Middle East’ five times in the past three years, and was named the world’s ‘Best International Carrier’ in 2008. Omran is one of the key telecom personalities across the region and has received many regional and international awards for his distinguished successes. Mohammed Omran also serves as the Chairman of Thuraya, one of the world’s leading, satellite, geo-mobile communication systems with coverage in more than 140 countries in Europe, central and southern Africa, the Middle East, and central and south Asia. He has held this position since 1997. Mohammed Omran joined Etisalat in 1977, one year after it was formed. He achieved his first senior position as Area Manager in Ras Al Khaimah in 1982. He was then appointed Deputy General Manager for Etisalat in 1984 and became Etisalat’s Senior Executive Vice President in 1999. He was named the Corporation’s Chief Executive Officer in 2004, and later in 2005 he was named Chairman of Etisalat.
