D egree and Certificate GAVILAN COLLEGE CATALOG 2015-2017 Programs Anthropology Anthropology A.A.-T Degree The Associate in Arts in Anthropology for Transfer degree is designed to prepare students for a seamless transfer into the CSU system to complete a baccalaureate degree in Anthropology. The Gavilan College Anthropology Program encompasses three subfields: cultural anthropology, physical anthropology, and archaeology. Together, these subfields offer a broad range of perspectives on the experiences and politics of being human. The courses offered teach students to develop a comprehensive understanding of humans in their diversity and complexity. These courses may be taken to satisfy the General Education requirements or to meet the requirements for an Associate in Arts in Anthropology for Transfer (ADT) degree. The ADT in Anthropology degree prepares students to transfer into the CSU system to pursue a baccalaureate degree in Anthropology or a related major. Total units for the major:18-20 Program Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the AA-T degree in Anthropology, students will be able to: ff Critically examine and analyze human nature and behavior. ff Critically examine and analyze anthropological ideas and data from a social justice perspective. ff Describe cultural change from historical, political economic, symbolic, and discursive perspectives. ff Describe biological and cultural factors responsible for human variation. ff Conduct ethnographic research within a local community. ff Write research papers using ethnographic, descriptive and analytic techniques. ALL ADT DEGREES REQUIRE: 1. Completion of 60 semester units or 90 quarter units that are eligible for transfer to the California State University, including both of the following: A. The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) or the California State University General Education – Breadth Requirements. B. A minimum of 18 semester units or 27 quarter units in a major or area of emphasis, as determined by the community college district. Total units that may be double-counted:(The total for each Area may not exceed the limit for the specific Area): 12-16 General Education (CSU GE or IGETC) units: 39 or 37 Elective (Transferable) units: 13-19 (CSU), 15-21 (UC) Total Degree units (maximum): 60 DOUBLE COUNTING RULE A course may be used to satisfy both general education and major courses. See "Double Counting Rule" on page 47. 2. Attainment of a minimum grade point average of 2.0. ADTs also require that students must earn a C or better in all courses required for the major or area of emphasis.
