It is probably fair to say that our understanding of “art” is a function of our
experience of art, whether we are patrons, observers, attendees,
participants, critics, or creators. In advance of this program day, we ask you
to attend an arts event of your choosing and be ready to talk about the
experience in terms not just of what the artistic event was (e.g., a play.
Film, exhibition, performance, etc.), but the setting in which it took place,
the audience attending/participating, the atmosphere of the occasion, the
nature of the organization putting it on, whether financial support was
solicited, and, overall, how you would judge the “health” of the venture.
We might suggest you experience an art form that isn’t one of your
regulars, in other words, something outside your usual experience.
In addition, we would also ask you to:
1. For one week, keep a log of the media outlets you use. For example,
from what sources do you get news and analysis, feature stories,
general information? Document the sources you go to and how long
you engage them. Please be as detailed in logging your use as you
can, e.g., number of hours, frequency within a day, week, etc.
2. Visit a media outlet that is totally new to you, in other words, one
you never use (e.g., al jazeera news, local talk radio, The Union
Leader, The Huffington Post, etc.) Visit the outlet at least twice and
record your impressions.
