…and will end with thousands
of YOUth!
Youth Guided means that young people have
the right to be empowered, educated, and
given a decision making role in the care of their
own lives as well as the policies and procedures
governing care for all youth in the community,
state and nation. This includes giving young
people a sustainable voice and then listening to
that voice.


Youth guided organizations create safe
environments that enable young people to
gain self sustainability in accordance with the
cultures and beliefs with which they identify.

A youth guided approach recognizes that
there is a continuum of power that should be
shared with young people based on their
understanding and maturity. Youth guided
organizations recognize that this process
should be fun and worthwhile.
To be their very best, our systems and
communities must encourage full youth
participation in design, implementation, and
evaluation of initiatives that effect their lives.
• Adult leaders and support staff should be
skilled in both genuinely engaging individual
youth and in advocating for and encouraging
youth to be full partners and leaders at
system level tables.
•

Adult allies must understand the importance
of youth as equal partners and leaders in
organizational or systems change efforts
 Adult allies must understand the value of
youth voice and perspective in the design,
implementation, and evaluation of service
system and policy level work to effectively
promote youth-guided movements.

An ongoing,
informal group
action that is
inspired by
passionately
shared ideas and
directed toward
positive change

Ongoing: A movement is
not a once and done sort of
event.
 Informal: A movement is
not fully controlled by
anyone it is organic
 Group Action: At its heart,
a movement is a group of
people simultaneously acting
in similar fashion

Passionately Shared
Idea: Members share a
common belief, discovery, or
piece of knowledge that
guides them to act in a similar
fashion
 Positive Change: people
become involved in
movements to make change.
Positive change could be big,
it could be more on a
community level or to
improve one’s own life

The youth MOVEment began several years
ago
 Systems of Care grants provided fiscal
support for MOVEment development
 In 2004, the National Youth Development
Board was created
 Youth M.O.V.E National was funded

Youth voice is all about hearing from young
people who have been involved in the childserving-systems in their states and therefore
have a unique perspective about how the
support, services, and/or interventions that
they received have helped or harmed their
ability to achieve improved life outcomes and
success.

Youth voice is a way of strategically sharing
your own lived experiences to help create
positive change in your community and/or in
systems around your state that serve youth
