HOUSE STAFF ADVISORY COUNCIL
VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER CENTER
May 2016
Main Agenda
Institutional Critical Care Committee
Minutes— 4/28/16
Submitted by Venessa Pinto, MD
Charters.
Next Steps—Carol and Barbara will put the Charter into the
new format and bring to the next meeting.
Topic—Infection Prevention Report—Tom Talbot
Summary/Decision—Dr. Talbot presented ICU infection data
through March, including historical data over the last 8 years
demonstrating the decrease in all infections. He reported that
beginning June 8 (targeted), a UA will be sent with every Urine
Culture. If the UA is negative, the culture will not be
processed. This is to avoid false positives.
Dr. Talbot alerted the committee that there have been cases of
measles reported in Memphis.
Next Setps—Education will be disseminated to faculty and
staff regarding the change in urine culture ordering.
Topic: Alarm Limits—Barbara Martin/All
Summary/Decision—The Medical Device Alarm Safety
Committee has created a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)
for alarm parameters in the ICU that reflects the limits set by
the group a number of years ago. The SOP and supporting
policy would require alarms be adjusted to patient parameters,
with default settings as noted. Nursing documentation would
reflect that alarm limits have been checked and are
appropriate for the patient. The SOP was approved.
Next Steps—The approved SOP will be implemented in the
ICUs pending final approval of the supporting policy.
Topic—ICCC Charter
- Lee Parmley/Carol Eck/All
Summary/Decision—Carol and Barbara presented the idea of
the ICCC meet every other month and the ICU Medical
Directors and Managers meet the other months. It was agreed.
Membership was discussed. There is a new format for

THE VANDERBILT HOUSE STAFF ADVISORY COUNCIL (HSAC)
This organization is advisory to the Executive Director of Vanderbilt University Medical Center for the purposes of communication of information to
house staff, problem identification, provision of counsel to other hospital organizations, when required, and to provide representation of the house
staff in these and all other matters pertinent to house staff, patients and the Vanderbilt affiliated hospital programs.
The Council is composed of one representative and alternate from all ACGME accredited programs. The Director of Graduate Medical Education is an
ex-officio member and does not vote.
The representatives are appointed annually and may serve an unlimited number of terms. At the discretion of individual departments, representatives
may be elected to office by a majority of residents within that department or may be appointed by the department Chief Resident or residency director.
They shall hold office from July 1st until the following June 30th. The HSAC will be advised at the last meeting of the academic year whether the acting
representative intends to continue in this position for the next 12 months or whether the representative will step down and be replaced, and, if possible, the HSAC should be notified as to who that replacement will be.
