This document contains two General Psychiatry placement descriptions: North Central Thames Foundation School (NCTFS) Individual Placement Description – Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust (Royal Free Hospital) Placement The Department F1 General Psychiatry The South Camden Recovery Centre (Day Programme) at the Jules Thorn Unit provides a service to adult patients with mental illness in South Camden, who suffer acute symptomatology associated with significant disability. Many of the patients might otherwise require admission to an acute in-patient unit. Jules Thorn is part of the Camden Acute Care Pathway and works closely with the South Camden Crisis Team as well as other community teams. The objectives are to promote a process of recovery irrespective of the diagnostic category into which patients may fall (the “Recovery Model”). The Consultant is Dr Toby Thompson and there is a full time CT, sessions from a higher trainee and a multidisciplinary team. The type of The Foundation doctor will be involved in clerking new admissions and presenting them to work to the Consultant. The will undertake reviews and attend the team meeting. The Foundation expect and doctors will always be supervised in their work by senior doctors. During the placement learning the doctor will be able to have experience in the following: opportunities Take a psychiatric history and mental state examination Conduct a risk assessment Formulate a management plan Prescribe psychotropic medication safely Keep accurate and relevant medical records Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and colleagues Work within a multi-disciplinary team Use evidence based medicine Participate in undergraduate medical teaching Use of Mental Capacity Act and Mental Health Acts Location Jules Thorn, St Pancras Hospital, 4 St Pancras Way, NW1 0PE Supervisor(s) Dr Toby Thompson Main duties The Foundation doctor will clerk new patients and they will review existing patients with of the members of the MDT. They will attend handover and ward rounds They will work closely placement with the CT and MDT. They will be involved in arranging and interpreting the results of various investigations. They will be involved in discharge planning. Under the supervision of a clinical supervisor they will prescribe pharmacological and psychosocial treatments for the patients that they are working with. They will refer them promptly to other professionals as directed by their clinical supervisors. This includes general adult mental health services (including rehabilitation, EIS, crisis and AOT services), services for ageing and mental health, an inpatient service for people with learning disabilities and substance misuse services. It is a 16 bed ward with 12 general adult patients which this post relates to and 4 for patients with Learning disability who are under the care of the LD team. The consultant is Dr Gina Waters and there is input from a higher trainee and a full time core trainee as well as ward manager, nurses, OT and HCAs The type of The Foundation doctor will be involved in clerking new admissions and presenting them to work to the Consultant. They will undertake reviews and attend the team meeting. The expect and Foundation doctors will always be supervised in their work by senior doctors. All in-patients should be reassessed as necessary and an update of their mental state made before each main ward round. The F1 will attend ward rounds and present new cases to the consultant. They will work closely with the core trainee They will be involved in arranging and interpreting the results of various investigations. They will be involved in discharge planning. Under the supervision of a clinical supervisor, they will prescribe treatments for the patients that they are working with. They will refer them promptly to other professionals as directed by their clinical supervisors.
