Hotel & Restaurant Management Work Experience

1.

If you are a student in Hotel and Restaurant Management, keep reading. If you are a student in another discipline, please contact YOUR department.

2.

Be sure that you understand that you WILL be paying tuition on this credit.

3.

If you have a job that you believe will apply, keep reading. If you do NOT HAVE A JOB, go to

Career Services (200 Mckinney Hall), or HRM job board for assistance in finding a job.

4.

Pick up a packet from your advisor, complete the forms, and include all of the required information.

5.

You will be asked how many credit hours you are seeking. Basically, the formula is: 3 credit hours = 600 hours of work. 2 credit hours= 400 hours of work; 1 credit hour = 200 hours of work. If you have been a student in HRM, I can “reach back” for about 6 months, if you need to in order to achieve this number of hours.

6.

Be aware: once you have taken a specific co-op class (such as #289), you cannot repeat it.

7.

1 st Co-op (HRM 289), the focus is an entry level position in an area that you have not previously worked. This experience is to explore a segment of the hospitality industry; front or back of the house.

8.

2 nd Co0op (HRM 389), the focus is to build on previous experience or explore a different segment of the hospitality industry. Speak with your advisor about your career aspirations and a plan for moving towards your career goals.

9.

Obtain permission from your employer to be sponsored as a coop. Attach a letter from your employer. It should be on their letterhead, from your supervisor (or another appropriate source), which includes Your name, your job title, your job description, the day you started, the salary, and the approximate number of hours your work per week. The employer’s role will be to continue to supervise you, and to complete an evaluation at the end of the semester. It is multiple choice, and requires your supervisor’s signature.

10.

An information packet will be sent to your email address. Complete the form and return to your advisor. Bring your packet (Student Information Form, Student agreement, and employer letter) to your faculty advisor.

11.

CONCURRENT to bringing your forms, send me an email ( sgregory5@emich.edu

) stating the following: a.

Your full name (first, middle, last) b.

Your EMU student number c.

Your EMU email d.

Number of credit hours you are seeking e.

Semester (Fall, Winter, Spring, or Summer) f.

Course Number

12.

I will forward this email to the appropriate people to get you PERMISSION to register. Again, you will be charged TUITION for this coop/internship. You will not receive a letter grade but rather credit or no credit.

13.

The HRM program will send you back permission to register. You MUST register yourself.

14.

Log on to emuonline and go to HRM co-op course (289 or 389). There are threaded discussions that you must participate in throughout the semester.

15.

Prepare your evaluation package, and include your employer’s brief evaluation, complete with an original signature. All paperwork, including the supervisor’s evaluation is due the week before finals!

16.

Your grade will appear along with other grades being posted at the end of the semester.
