SMC Policy Advisory Meeting March 3, 2016, Weyerhaeuser, Vancouver, WA SMC’s March 3rd, 2016 PA meeting took place at Weyerhaeuser Vancouver office beginning at 10:15 AM. For Approval 1. Approved: Proposal for Green Crow to join SMC 2. Approved: Doug Maguire, (OSU) grad. student, Kristina Kline request access to SMC Type I plot tree lists for research 3. Approved: Doug Mainwaring, (OSU) request access to SMC Type I and Type III hemlock data for growth equations 1 of 3 4. Approved: Phil Radtke, (Virginia Tech) request access to SMC’s felled tree measurements for the purpose of testing and revising national scale biomass estimators 5. Tabled: Need more info: Phil Radtke, (Virginia Tech) request SMC share it’s data for inclusion in an online repository under construction, known as the LegacyTreeData project. Phil Radtke will be invited to SMC’s Annual Spring Meeting to further discuss this request. 6. Approved: SMC field crew job announcement. Opening will be posted on UW hire, SAF, Pacific Forest Foundation, Monster, Indeed, Green River Community College, OSU and TAMU. 7. Approved: Edited Annual Spring Meeting Agenda 8. Approved: Gareth Waugh (Port Blakely Tree Farms) to replace Brian Schlaefli (Plum Creek) as the Vice Chair of the Policy Committee Budget Turnblom brought members up-to-date on changes with memberships and reductions in dues. 1. Sierra Pacific Industries (SPI) informed SMC that as of 2016 they will no longer be a dues paying member ($23,000) 2. Plum Creek Timberlands was bought out by Weyerhaeuser ($27,000) 3. BLM’s dues will drop from $83,000 to $25,000 ($58,000) as a result of their land being reclassified 4. 2016 projected dues, $617,237 with a 62K carryover 5. 2017 projected dues (plus carryover), $603,903, with a negative carryover as large as 47K Budget discussion points • • • How will the loss of $108,000 in dues impact current and proposed research? How does this factor into a strategy for SMC hiring? What would SPI need from SMC in order to maintain their membership? o Fertilization predictably o Pruning for owl dispersal habitat Non- agenda items discussed • • • Are we at critical point of decision making on growth and resources, should we look at sunsetting additional plots and segue into more analysis? How do we as a coop agree on and communicate a shared vision? Members would like to see the UW offer additional support to the SMC though services, economic means or time, similar to what OSU provided the newly appointed Vegetation Management Research Cooperative (VMRC) Director. An Outreach Committee formed with the task of reaching out to SEFS Director Tom DeLuca and Dean of the College, Lisa J. Graumlich to increase awareness of support for the SMC. Members include Dave Hamlin, Gareth Waugh, Scott McLeod, Greg Johnson and Candace Cahill.
