In the mid-1980s she became deeply interested in hormones and behavior and began to study the impact of experimental phenotypic manipulations in the field, using hormones to simultaneously modify the expression of numerous traits related to lifespan and reproduction. During more recent years, she has studied natural variation in hormonal phenotypes, exploring the impact of hormone-mediated characters on performance (survival and reproduction). By extending this approach across populations, she and her students have broken new ground in understanding the role of hormones in rapid behavioral evolution.
