EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY EDLD 509 SOCIAL JUSTICE SERVICE LEARNING Social Justice Service Learning The purpose of this assignment is to foster collaboration of students in exploring a critical issue of concern with respect to engaged learning relative to exceptionality, gender, language, race/ethnicity, religion, social class, or sexual orientation. Research has shown that service learning creates reciprocal benefits for the individual and the community. As the Department of Leadership and Counseling seeks to promote leadership development through experiential learning, this assignment offers the opportunity for students to practice servant leadership, to work toward being activist leaders, sharpen cross-cultural communications, improve sense of multicultural efficacy and combine community service with the art of reflective practice. The goal is for each student to partner with a non-profit community agency or educational organization that works with diverse populations for a minimum of 20 hours (e.g., two hours per week for 10 weeks or four hours per week over the course of five weeks). Site Approval Prior to staring your service-learning experience, be sure you have submitted your one-page action plan describing the site selected and the type of experience you intend to embark on (i.e., explain why the site/program was selected and how it is a good fit for service-learning; provide a preliminary description of the role and responsibilities of each party (i.e., you and the agency/organization) has; and finally, how this context should further your understanding and appreciation as a educational leader for diverse groups and advocating for social justice. Please note: It is critical that you do the aforementioned in ascertaining the suitability of the site/proposed volunteer work is in alignment with the core aims of this assignment (e.g., furthering your knowledge, skills and dispositions relative to working in pluralistic environments and with highly diverse populations). Provide the name, number, and e-mail of the staff person at the organization who will assist in solidifying/overseeing your volunteer activities (5 points); Reflective Journaling Submit a typed reflection journal that connects theory-to-practice in terms of what you have learned from your volunteer activities in correspondence with observations in the community, lectures, in-class discussions, course texts, and supplemental readings. Please note that you will occasionally be provided with in-class reflection periods as application breaks to link, synthesize and make meaning out of aspects of your service learning. Provide summary remarks regarding what you consider necessary next steps in contributions to social justice and service learning that are contextualized for the organization. Presentation Each student will develop a presentation of his/her service learning experiences in the form of an MS Power Point file that may embed audio and/or video clips/links. You will share your field experience with the larger class by posting your presentation in Doc Sharing. The presentation should also provide summary remarks regarding what you consider necessary next steps in contributions to social justice and service learning that are contextualized for the organization.
