My summer internship with Mines Residence Life was everything I wanted and more. As Housing Operations Intern, I was able to learn the back end processes that keep a residence life department running. I also got the unique experience of working at a small, specialized, STEM institution. Projects included, but were not limited to:

 Coordinating over 700 move-in volunteers

 Ordering volunteer t-shirts and food for move-in

 Conducting a furniture audit for all residence hall rooms and supervising furniture move / standardization process

 Coordinating showroom setup for orientation with campus partners Bed, Bath & Beyond

 Working with student marketing team on social media initiatives

 Creating educational skits addressing move-in issues for student staff training

 Entering housing assignments into StarRez

 Researching the life span of residence hall furniture to contribute to the renew, replace, renovate project to plan for future capital requests

 Creating a utility history report as a reference document for all res life managed buildings (res halls, Mines

Park apartment housing, greek housing) for the past four years

I was also able to connect with the Student Activities Office and the Center for Academic Services and Advising

(CASA) to learn how these departments function at a STEM university. The best part of my experience was the people I worked with. Everyone in the department was welcoming, got to know me as a person, and was wonderful to work with. No one ever treated me like an intern, just as part of the team, and everyone wanted to help me make my summer a great experience. Katie was the best supervisor. She gave me projects to work on, let me approach them how I wanted and figure things out on my own, but was always there to support me. I’m very thankful to have been part of this department for the summer, and to learn what to look for in a department when I’m applying for jobs.

I loved living in Golden for the summer. Colorado has so much to offer and my only regret is not being able to do everything on my summer list! My on-campus apartment was beautiful, and I really enjoyed living with the

Conference Services Intern, who became one of my good friends. I came into my internship with no residence life experience, and not having considered residence life as a career path for me. I learned so much while at Mines, and am definitely interested in residence life as functional area after this experience. I would recommend anyone to apply for this internship.
