(Q) Do primary structural members have to be fire rated when they are incased in a
rated assembly?
(A) Yes, Section 704 requires that all primary structural members including their
connections be protected independently from the fire rated assembly.
2. (Q) How is the occupant load for dance and karate studios to be calculated?
(A) Based on the IBC 2009 code commentary the occupant load should be
calculated at 50 sq. ft. per occupant.
3. (Q) How should the thermal barrier required in Section2603.4 be applied?
(A) Thermal barriers required by this section on reach in and walk in coolers and
freezers shall be ½” gyp. bd. applied to the exterior top, sides, and back with
joints mudded and taped.
4. (Q) What is the occupancy of internet sweepstakes establishments?
(A) With an occupant load of 15 sq. ft. per machine an occupant load of less
than 50 would be a B occupancy and occupant load greater than 49 would
be an A-3 occupancy.
