Job description
Ensure the department is up to date with all appropriate Health and Safety legislation and provide guidance to department.
Ensure that all statutory safety regulations and safe practice is adhered with including teachers, technicians and pupil ’s
involvement in the classrooms and laboratory.
Liaise with teaching staff to develop new practical ideas and advise on schemes of work
Develop and review new systems in the laboratories and prep rooms to improve the technical support service
Oversee and participate in in house repairs, calibration and maintenance
Maintain records of books within the department and those issued
Source contractors for external repairs
Liaise with suppliers to obtain the highest quality and most cost effective
Maintaining a thorough stock control and order system
Maintaining an electronic record of expenditure
Ensuring an up to date chemical database exists
Develop and implement laboratory documentation systems including the organisation of work sheets, filing, hazard data and
legal records.
Daily, weekly laboratory servicing, termly inspections and organise annual clean
Oversee the practical preparation, including materials, equipment, stock, standard solutions and specimens
Recovery of residues and safe disposal in accordance with legislation
Supporting Head of Department/2nd in Department in other areas as required

Manage the continuous professional development of the Science Technicians
Identify the training needs of the Science Technicians in line with the department requirements
Performance manage the Science Technicians
Delegate, prioritise and monitor a daily work schedule for the Science Technician team

To help where appropriate identify suitable training strategies for staff in liaison with 2nd in Department
•
To provide training, where appropriate, to staff or pupils
•
To attend relevant training courses to ensure that the Technician department are up-to-date with relevant Health and
Safety requirements
