Browsing Genes and Genomes with Ensembl
e-Science Institute 16th May 2006
The Ensembl project (http://www.ensembl.org) provides a
comprehensive and integrated source of annotation of, mainly
vertebrate, genome sequences. It's an invaluable tool for Research
scientists working on human and other model organisms genetics.
This one-day workshop offers participants the possibility of gaining
lots of hands-on experience in the use of the Ensembl genome
browser but also provides them with the necessary background
information.
Due to the success of registration, we organized a second day of the
course, in order to accommodate 40 delegates in total. The course
was given by Bert Overduin from the Ensembl team at the EBI in
Hinxton.
Most of the delegates were Research Biologist working in the MRC –
Human Genetics Unit in Edinburgh. The majority never or rarely used
Ensembl and its data mining tool Biomart.
The comments from attendees after the event were positive - About
three quarters of them were likely or very likely to make more use of
Ensembl and Biomart after the course, and would recommend the
course to their colleagues.
We would like to thank very much the e-science centre and all the
staff involved for a perfect organisation of the course!
