National e-Science Centre Integrated Care Records problems and solutions workshop e-Science Institute 11th- 12th December 03 The aim of this workshop was to bring together academics, practitioners, system developers and policy makers who are working towards developing shared electronic medical records. The workshop is timely given the recent policy initiatives and the pursuit of the Integrated Care Records Programme in the NHS. There was a lively discussion stimulated by a number of high quality presentations, exploring system architectures, clinical practice, project management, security issues, as well as organisational and social dimensions to achieving integration. The workshop was planned to be the first in a series aiming to build an interdisciplinary community around the topic of healthcare integration, and was successful in bringing together people with a diverse range of interests, concerns, experiences and practical problems. The presentations and papers will shortly be made available on the workshop website (http://www.iccs.informatics.ed.ac.uk/~mjh/chameleon/ICRworkshop/index.html). Arising from the workshop there will be a call for contributions to a special issue of the Health Informatics Journal on Integrated Care Records in January 2004. A follow-up workshop is planned for Autumn/Winter 2004. Mark Hartswood Informatics University of Edinburgh
