National e-Science Centre eSI Visitor Seminar: "From Placenta to the Brain: Image Informatics Challenges and Experiences" e-Science Institute 18th May 2006 Dr Tony Pan presented work that he is involved with at Ohio State University in the Department of Biomedical Informatics. This ranged from image registration for 3D reconstruction from sections through to automated segmentation for recognition of complex boundaries in the mouse placenta. There was a large audience and lively discussion throughout. The seminar was the culmination of a visit to eSI to discuss possible collaboration with the DGEMap group at the eSI and the Mouse Atlas group at the MRC Human Genetics Unit. This has resulted in an ongoing discussion and exchange of data and technologies. Some of the GRID-based image access and visualisation capabilities of OSU will be applied to the mouse embryo data from Edinburgh, and the sophisticated reconstruction techniques developed at the HGU are being applied to the OSU data. The visit has proved valuable to both sides. Richard Baldock
