Proceedings of 10th Global Business and Social Science Research Conference 23 -24 June 2014, Radisson Blu Hotel, Beijing, China, ISBN: 978-1-922069-55-9 Relationship of Environment with the Types of Business Strategies Jhony Ostos Mariño Several authors consider that the environment variable influences strategic business decisions. However, the studies do not examined this influence in different types of business strategies. This empirical study conducted, with a sample of 99 service companies in Lima, Peru, aims to analyze the influence of the environment on the types of business strategies and examine the organizational characteristics as moderating variable of the relationship between environment and business strategies. To perform this analysis, the environment is divided into two dimensions: complex and uncertain; and business strategies into three types: prospector, analyzer and defender. The statistical results indicate that the complex environment influences the three types of strategies: prospector, analyzer, and defender; while the uncertain environment only influence companies that implement prospector strategies. These findings indicate that not all companies are taking into account the effects of the uncertain environment to establish business strategies. It also finds that organizational characteristics do not moderate the relationship between the environment and business strategies.
