Visne Korkmaz Since the end of the Cold War super power overlay, East Asian regional security has continued to be example of successful regional security management. The discourse of Asian Peace or ASEAN Way is a kind of continuation of rhetoric of Asian Miracle and reflects the harmony – or at least convergence- between global and regional security agendas based on idea of merits of liberal economic development. Though this harmony between liberalism and development agenda was succeeded –at least on rhetorical basis- major instrument of it, cooperative security, led the actors of regional security put their bets both on best and worst case scenario. Therefore both moderation and strategic hedging became part of tradition of regional security in East Asia. That is why today the possible limits and efficiency of strategic hedging is discussed by the scholars and practisers of regional security under the impact of three challenges: i-power asymmetry challenge based on the question of what would be the future of great power politics in East Asia, ii- North Korean challenge based on the question of what would be the future of denuclearization norm in East Asia, iii- challenge against state-centric region view based on the question of what would be the future of Pax-Asia. This paper briefly evaluates the future of East Asian regional security management mechanisms under these three challenges by focusing on the question of whether there is still a harmony between regional and global security agendas? ______________________________________________________ Assoc.
