To date, numerous studies had been done regarding SME with broad perspectives includes SME inefficiency, access to credit, survival rates, restricted banking service and many more. However, the discussion on SME challenges alone is vital to the SME development but often been isolated with other matters. Further, this paper aims to put together SME challenges accordingly from various sources of literature review worldwide to highlight the main challenges happening surrounds SME. In achieving this objective, the methodology used includes library search and analyzing previous literature review on the subject of SME and challenges regardless of financial, operational or managerial aspect. The significant challenges are found namely access to credit, management skills and marketing. The critical discussion provided in this paper would strengthen the body of knowledge on the SME challenges which affecting business performance, besides to act as a reference for empirical research.
