Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to analyze relationships and to investigate the effects
of other variables that may interact with an international approach in influencing export
performance. These variables include innovative capacity, market dynamism, and a
favorable business environment.
Design/methodology/approach -. The sample includes 319 export firms that were selected
according to their size and location in Colombian’s main cities. The model estimation was
performed using a hierarchical linear regression.
Findings - The results show that an international approach is a strong facilitator of export
performance in the Born Global category, but this relationship is moderated when
analyzing innovative capacity, market dynamism, and a favorable business environment,
with a greater effect on export performance when the international approach is
complemented by other variables.
Practical Implications - This study provides some guidelines for the administrators of
export firms and specifically Born Global firms. In addition, the results of this study also
indicate that managers should develop their international approach together with an
innovative capacity that allows for the creation of unique and differentiated products to
achieve better export performance
Originality/value - Recently, there has been increased interest in researching the factors
behind the export performance of firms. The present study bases its analysis on the type of
international firm known as Born Global to study the influence of an international approach
on export performance.
