Dear Service Provider:
In 2012, in an effort to promote the energy sector and local energy companies, the Charlotte Douglas
International Airport (CLT) partnered with the Charlotte Regional Partnership’s energy division on a pilot
project at CLT integrating the latest energy-efficient lighting from local companies in the CharlotteMetro area. CLT has decided to continue this initiative in 2013 with the goal of promoting environmental
sustainability through public/private partnerships between CLT and the local business community. The

CLT hereby publishes this Request for Expression of Interest (RFI) to solicit interest for the 2013 Pilot
Project: Sustainable Bus Shelter Components for an Existing Bus Shelter (2013 Pilot Project). The goal of
the 2013 Pilot Project is to upfit an existing bus shelter with the latest solar-powered technology to
enable it to be powered off the electrical grid. The shelter selected for the 2013 Pilot Project is located
in CLT’s Long Term Parking Lot 1 at the Q bus shelter. The intent of this RFI is to identify vendors and/or
service providers that are interested in participating in the 2013 Pilot Project by providing one or more
of the following six (6) core components:

Description
Renewable energy storage system that is UL or ETL certified and
capable of lasting a minimum of 72-hours from a power consuming load
equivalent to 50-watts.
Direct Current (DC) capable LED light fixture(s)
Solar PV panel(s) that is/are UL or ETL certified and capable of running
a power consuming load equivalent to 50-watts and charging a battery
storage system for 72 hours.
Solar compacting waste/recycle bin.
Solar-powered light box that is UL or ETL certified. This will be used to
illustrate the shelter’s sustainability components to the public and list its
suppliers.
Solar streetlight/parking lot light that is UL or ETL certified and is
capable of being installed by a direct-bury method.

All proposed products will be evaluated for sustainable integration and possible future implementation
as CLT seeks to implement similar sustainability technologies in additional facilities in coming years. To
assist with the 2013 Pilot Project, CLT has partnered with Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC)
to help evaluate submissions received in response to this RFI. Please note: Participation in the pilot
program will include but will not be limited to local vendors and/or service providers.
Companies interested in participating in the 2013 Pilot Project must submit an interest packet to CLT no
later than 3:00 p.m. on Friday, October 18. Please be sure to include the following information with

Questions regarding this RFI must be submitted in writing to Patrick Cerri, Airport Sustainability
Specialist at plcerri@cltairport.com. Responses to all questions received will be provided in an
addendum to this RFI published no later than Friday, October 11, 2013. A site tour of the existing shelter
is available anytime from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Monday, October 14, 2013. Interested parties should call or
e-mail Patrick Cerri in advance to schedule an escorted tour at 704-359-4031.
