Abstract of presentation on Update on status of IEEE Access Network Standards

IEEE Standards developments in Access Networks have primarily been developed within the IEEE
802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee. This talk will review the key areas within IEEE 802 such as
Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM), 10Gigabit Ethernet Fiber Networks, Wireless LANs (11a,11b),
Wireless PAN (802.15) and Broadband Wireless (802.16). A status report of each technology as
well as the expected schedule will be given. Finally, the talk will outline the process followed to
develop a standard within the IEEE standards development arena pointing out differences and
similarities to the ITU-T Recommendation Development Process.
