YOUTH APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM YOUTH APPRENTICESHIP WORKS! The Youth Apprenticeship Program, coordinated by Lakeshore Technical College and the Department of Workforce Development, provides numerous benefits to businesses, communities, and students from area high schools. Through participation in Youth Apprenticeship, employers teach valuable skills and provide work experiences to high school juniors and seniors. Students in YA receive hands-on learning in a specific career field along with classroom instruction. With oversight from a company mentor, students develop the same job skills and have similar responsibilities as other employees in that area. Prior to being offered a position, employers interview students to ensure the best fit for both the student and employer. Youth Apprenticeship students, in most cases, begin working for a company in June. During the school year they split their time between working and classroom learning. Students in the program are highly motivated and focused on the area of work they choose. Benefits to students include: Experience in the job application and interviewing process Relevant real world work experience Classroom instruction related to a career field Able to earn college credit while in high school. Statewide, more than 1,300 employers are making a difference in the lives of nearly 1,800 students from almost 250 schools, according to the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development. These employers help students gain the work experience and skills they need to make a positive impact in their communities. Lakeshore Technical College coordinates the apprenticeship program for 16 Sheboygan area high schools. Employers make a difference in these students’ lives and the community, while also getting student workers committed to assisting in the growth of local industry. “From a corporate perspective, we are giving back to the community and helping develop the community. We are also helping develop the local pool of talent. We are ultimately a benefactor of the local talent pool. From an individual and mentor perspective, we are providing our knowledge and experience to a young individual. In doing this, we help the individual have a better opportunity in the start of their working life." Robert Wells, CMRP General Supervisor – Central Maintenance Kohler Company “It is important for employers to invest in our future leaders and challenge the students to think „outside the box‟. It gives me great pleasure to share my work and life experiences with students.” Jane Martin RN, MSN, CCRN Manager ICCU Aurora Memorial Medical Center For more information, contact: Jackie Holly Youth Apprenticeship Manager Lakeshore Technical College Direct: 920.693.1128 Fax: 920.693.1834 jackie.holly@gotoltc.edu gotoltc.edu/BusinessYA YOUTH APPRENTICESHIPS ARE AVAILABLE IN THE FOLLOWING CAREER AREAS: Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics o Mechanical Design o Bio Science Lab Arts, AV Tech & Communcations o Graphic Design and Pre-Press Manufacturing o Assembly and Packaging o o Production Management-R & D Kiel High School o Production Operations-QA Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah High School o Machining New Holstein High School Sheboygan North High School Sheboygan South High School Sheboygan Central High School George D.
