The assessment and evaluation of fire conditions on private lands will be done by local organizations. This evaluation will be used to identify and implement treatment opportunities on a cost-share basis to help fireproof residences and acreages within the interface area. The educational workshops will be put on by United Community Partners in cooperation with various partners. Data gained from the evaluation will also be used as a part of a feasibility study looking at economic opportunities to produce a product from treatment-generated wood fiber and to provide jobs for the valley. A pilot treatment project will be done in the summer of 2002 which will also provide data for the feasibility study. Other treatments will be done in 2003 and 2004. 1000 acres may be treated. 26 0 Project Title: U. S. A Wildland Urban Interface Grant (WUI) was awarded in the amount of $19,140.00 in cooperation with Douglas Forest Protective Association (DFPA). Through this grant we were able to establish partners with DFPA, Tiller Volunteer Fire Department and 4 private landowners. The project is located in the town of Tiller and the area of work includes 6 private homes, a local grade school, 2 private business, the community church, volunteer fire department and National Forest lands. In 2001 were able to complete 38 acres of work, which included brushing, mowing, pruning and burning underbrush and ladderfuels around these properties. For this season we need to maintain the work accomplished and at the same time start on the next phase of including an addition 60 acres. 47 0 Project Title: Oregon Department of Forestry Dry Creek, Seven Mile Hill 541 296 4626 Dry Creek Drainage, Seven Mile Hill Defensible Space & Hazard Fuel Reduction Amount Funded By: FS: $0 BLM: $0 Comments: Pam (FWS) will also look at being a partner FWS: $0 3/15/2002 Proj Coord Name: BIA: $0 $172,000 $202,000 FSWUI BLM 0 O2 David Jacobs, Assistant Unit Forester FS WUI: $172,000 Total Funded: $172,000 Description: Provide assistance to non-industrial landowners in the Dry Creek Drainage of the Seven Mile Hill area just outside of The Dalles, for vegetation management to create defensible space, to reduce fire hazard, and improve forest health in the adjoining timber stands. The funds would be used as a cost share incentive to allow landowners to make a single entry into stands and treat the total stand to meet the objective of reducing the fire hazard and improving forest health. This area is at extreme risk from wildfire due to the increase in rural residences in the Interface, and the signifant role that the Columbia Gorge winds play in creating a potential for disasterous wildfires. 58 0 Project Title: Oregon Department of Forestry Chiloquin RFD Fuel Reduction Chiloquin 541 883 5681 Proj Coord Name: 3/15/2002 $95,940 $95,940 FSWUI BIA 0 O2 Danny Benson, Unit Forester Amount Funded By: FS: $0 BLM: $0 FWS: $0 BIA: $0 FS WUI: $96,000 Total Funded: $96,000 Comments: Description: Provide assistance to non-industrial landowners in the Chiloquin area for vegetation management to create defensible space and to reduce fire hazard. It will build upon fuels mitigation projects in place and planned in Union County. We have found, with existing projects, that demand for assistance far exceeds funding. Wood fibers and local work force, hopefully including the NEO District youth crew (pilot) will be utilized whenever feasible to support a local depressed economy. Financial stability from cost share funds will benefit both the environment and local citizens. Within Kittitas & Yakima two sites have been selected as priority high risk, high danger and in high fire activity areas. (1)These areas are able to be protected as a group with shaded fuel breaks and right of way clearing providing defensable spaces and breaks in the fuel continuity. (2)The reduction of fuels in the "common owned areas" of the subdivisions will allow these areas to be demonstration sites for the community to use as an educational site. (3)Individual home site prescriptions wil be available from trained staff with a roaving chipper that will be available for homeowners to be able to change the biomass to chips rather that attempting to burn the altered fuels. This plan will allow the best in protection from wildfire for these properties.
