Goose Prairie Expasion is a continuation of another funded project that began in Spring of 2006 in
this area by Yakima County.
Goose Prairie is an area off of State Hwy 410 that has been ranked as the highest WUI risk rated
area as completed in a planning grant of Kittitas and Yakima Counties in 2002. This area is located
below Bumping Lake and is surrounded by Federal Lands. This area is experincing devistation
from Spruce Bud Worm and Pine Beatle infestation which is causing the fire danger to increase.
Goose Prairie is internationally known for the connection to US Supreme Court Justice William O.
Douglas who owned property here.
Dominant fuel type is dry mixed coniferous with pine-fir and larch. The historical fire regime is
Fire Regime Type 1 with high frequency and low serverity. Due to to lack of fire in the proposed
area in recent history, the chance of fire severity has increased many fold being allowed in this area
in it's natural occurence and we must now do fuel modification to replicate the fire's actions.
With this expansion of a partially completed fuel modification program that has received acceptance
and is lacking in complete funding we will have in conjunction with our Federal partners a section
of the forest that has been treated in many land use functions( Commercial Forest- WUI- and
roadside fuel alterations) to allow for protection at it’s best for all of Gosse Prairie.

Community Meeting- Community Meeting with demonstration plot for show. May/June
Start Project-Due to location of project construction window is May - Nov Contract to be issued to
allow max. time for project. Work to start after Community Meeting by Contractor
Completion of Project- 1.5 construction seasons will be needed to completed project.

Provide a brief scope of work which clearly describes how grant funds will be spent. (This
should be more specific than the project description) [1500 Characters Maximum]
Yakima County has expended funds in Phase One of this project to use GIS and Auditors records to
find, locate and secure ability to do work on these propeties which are in Goose Prairie.
The project will be dictated by weather due to snow and high fire danger. We hope to be able to
start with the project as the snow is leaving and before fire danger is extreme and to follow up on
any left over parcels in the fall of the year or spring of following year.
A contractor will be selected by bidding and will be secured for the project. The limbing and saw
work will be done first with the larger that 6 inch wood piled in sections. The chipping will then be
done with chips being spread on the forest floor or taken to Boy Scout Camp in the project to be
used for mulch as per land owners wishes. Areas that have small bursh type plants and grasses will
be masticated and or mowed per contractor plan.
Wood larger than 6 inches that was piled can be used by owners or will be picked up by Boy Scout
Group per land owners to be used for firewood. Due to location of project, costs to truck and market
Bio-mass is not profitable at this time. If market is to change to allow profits those would be added
into project as income.

Specify the private, local, tribal, county, state, federal and/or non-governmental [501(c)(3)]
organizations that will contribute to or participate in the completion of this project. Describe
briefly the contributions each partner will make (i.e. – donating time/equipment, funding, etc.)

Yakima County, Yakima County Fire Chief's,WADNR, USFS, Yakima County Fire Districts #2,
#12, and #14, Goose Prairie Homeowners Assocation, YCLCG and Hwy 410 & 12 CWWP Group
shall be partners in this project. Expected amount of in-kind time shall meet the required match for
the grant. Agencies will be donating time, expertise, support and equipment. Planning meetings for
the public shall be used as a selling point and an educational tool for teaching of "Firewise" type
fuel planning projects

Clearly describe how the proposed treatments will be maintained over time. [500 Characters

This project will be on private property and upkeep of the project shall fall back on to the owners of
the property. Yakima County Fire Protection Bureau will provide technical asssisatnce for property
owners for the future needs along with USFS & WADNR.
Biomass Utilization

For the purpose of this application, biomass utilization is defined as any practicable end-use of the material that
has value, or the trading of capital for the woody material.

The location of the project lowers the financial outlook of the project. If market condtions change

At this time all wood over 6 inches shall be piled on the properties. If removal per landowner is
requested, Boy Scouts will collect all materials not wanted by property owners for use at the camp.
Chips shall be spread of forest floor unless property owners do not want, unwanted chips will be
placed at the Boy Scout Camp and used for mulch.

Contractor shall be selected via bid process for this project.

We do not anticipate generating revenue for Bio-mass at this time. Location of project would produce
a negative outcome for removal due to trucking costs. This project does allow for groundwork with
contactors for a source of bio-mass.
