ThisseminarstudiesthetransferofscientificknowledgefromtheancientGreco-Romanworldtoan
ArabiccontextfromtheninthcenturyonwardandaWesternChristiancontextfromtheeleventh
centurytotheeveoftheRenaissance.Wewillexaminehowandwhycentresoflearning,suchas
AlexandriaandBaghdadorsouthernItalyandSpain,broughtbothcontinuityandchangetothe
scientifictradition.Bystudyinggeography,astronomy,physiology,contagiousdiseases,and
pharmacology,wewillexplorethewaysinwhichMuslim,JewishandChristianviewsofknowledge
influencedeachotherintheformationofascientificmethodandspiritofinquiryintothenaturalworld
basedonapaganpast.Howdidthedifferentsciences,suchasmedicine,geography,astrology,and
mathematics,connectwitheachotherandwithphilosophyandtheology?Wewillalsoconsiderthe
WesternspreadofscientificknowledgeoutofthelearnedLatin-speakingworldtoabroaderaudience
throughtranslationsintotheEuropeanvernaculars.
Theprimaryobjectiveoftheseminaristoprovidestudentswithanextensiveoverviewofscienceinthe
medievalArabicandLatinworlds,viewedfromacomparativeanalyticperspective.Weshallapproach
thetopicfromaninterdisciplinaryangle,addressingmedievalscience,technologyandmedicinefrom
historical,sociologicalandanthropologicalmethodologies.Byanalysingtechnical,literaryandvisual
sources,wewillexplorethemedievalunderstandingsofmicrocosmandmacrocosm,thehumanbody
andthenaturalworld.
