TARGET AUDIENCE
This course is designed for radiologists and gynecologists/obstetricians as well as
nurses, medical sonographers, and other interprofessional health care team members
who use and/or need to improve their ability to perform ultrasound scans.
EDUCATIONAL NEED
This course is designed to change physician competence regarding the criteria
for diagnosing ultrasound abnormalities. Course participants’ evaluations and
community physician annual needs assessment surveys have identified the need for
cutting edge information about obstetrical and gynecological ultrasound. There have
been recent changes to the new AIUM guidelines in the second and third trimester
that will be explained in detail to the participants. Specific anomalies of the fetus
including the cranial anomalies even those that may not be detected until the third
trimester pregnancy will be detailed. Other anomalies such as those occurring in
the fetal face, spine, or abdomen will be presented. There will be a specific detailed
analysis on diagnosis and management of fetal cardiac disease. Early first trimester
ultrasound including correlation between ultrasound and embryology will be
presented. Additionally newer updates will be presented on topics such as carotid
ultrasound and the use of Doppler and color flow in routine ultrasound practice.
Review of the best approach for thyroid nodules will be presented as well as the
sonographic evaluation of etiology of pain and bleeding of the second and third
trimester of pregnancy. The course will specifically address the identified educational
needs and provide practitioners with state-of-the-art tools and provide improved
treatment options for their patients. The faculty presenting and interacting with
participants at this activity have been selected on the basis of their comprehensive
clinical experience and academic excellence.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
At the end of the activity, participants should be able to:
• Identify the sonographic findings that are most commonly encountered
with fetal cardiac abnormalities
• List ultrasound features of specific cerebral malformations
• Apply the use of Doppler in carotid arterial imaging
Simran Sekhon, MD
Assistant Clinical Professor
Department of Radiology
UC Davis Health System
• Discuss the new AIUM guidelines for the second and third trimester of pregnancy
Jay Yeh, MD
Assistant Professor
Division of Pediatric Cardiology
Department of Pediatrics
UC Davis Health System
• Predict the numerous etiologies that can cause pain in the second and third
trimester of pregnancy
• Restate recent updates in ultrasound diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy
• Explain the specific devastating consequences of misdiagnosis of placenta accreta
on either ultrasound or MRI
• Identify abnormalities that can be encountered with scrotal imaging
• Review specific ultrasound imaging features of malignant thyroid nodules
