Italian theatre practitioner Domenico Castaldo studied acting at the Scuola del Teatro
Stabile di Torino, where he worked with theatre makers including Luca Ronconi,
Gabriele Vacis, and Walter Pagliaro. In 1995 he joined the Workcenter of Jerzy
Grotowski and Thomas Richards in Pontedera for a two-year period during which he
collaborated with Polish theatre director Jerzy Grotowski on the latter’s last theatre
performance Action within the context of Art as Vehicle. In 1997, Castaldo founded
the Laboratorio Permanente di Ricerca sull’Arte dell’Attore, (http://www.labperm.it)
in Turin. With his ensemble Castaldo worked on various projects intended to serve as
training platforms for actors but also as processes for encounter with audiences in
performance. Castaldo is the artistic director of The Garden, a workshop programme
intended for professional actors, newcomers to the world of theatre, and any
individuals interested to experience theatrical activity through practice.
The Workshop
The practical workshop will focus on musical elements including rhythm, tempo, and
song and how these can be utilized in theatre, including the construction of
dramaturgies for performance. Musicality in theatre is a relatively recent area of
scholarship and research within the context of theatre and performance studies framed
around the interdisciplinary nature of the performing arts. The workshop aims at
familiarizing participants with different approaches and exercises that promote an
idea of relationality in performance making processes.
