Limited Submissions Limited submission programs have sponsor restrictions on the number of proposals that may be submitted by a single institution and will require institutional screening to determine which applications will be submitted. Dr. Jim Guikema, Associate Vice President for Research, is the internal coordinator for limited submission programs. Please notify him at 785-532-6195, email: guikema@ksu.edu, by the Internal due date listed in the Funding Bulletin (FB 27-10, 27-11) or by at least two months prior to the sponsor deadline if you wish to submit to a limited submission program. Currently posted Internal Deadlines: http://www.k-state.edu/research/ funding/bulletins/bul11/limits11/ index.htm GENERAL 27-1 Biochronicity (DARPA) DARPA seeks to define the spatio-temporal instructive components encoded in cells in the context of their biological systems, through the application of advanced principals from evolutionary biology, genomics, mathematics, algorithm development, data mining, and the physical sciences. DARPA is soliciting research proposals for the Biochronicity program that will identify common spatio-temporal instructions or clock signatures in the genome, epigenome, proteome, and/or transcriptome across prokaryotic and eukaryotic species. The focus of the program will be on unraveling biological clock systems in prokaryotes and eukaryotes and the efforts of this initiative will contribute to the understanding and management of disease, trauma, human combat performance, and emerging infectious disease countermeasures. Additionally, a greater understanding of molecular oscillators and the evolution of biological clocks will lead to fundamental advancements in developmental science, drug development, aging, and cell death.DARPA-BAA11-66 (GG 7/14/11) URL: http://www07.grants.gov Deadline: 8/30/2011 Vol. 20, No. 27 27-2 Research to Understand and Inform Interventions that Promote the Research Careers of Students in Biomedical and Behavioral Sciences (R01) (NIH) This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits applications that propose research designed to test assumptions and hypotheses regarding social and behavioral factors with the aim of advising and guiding the design of potential interventions intended to increase interest, motivation and preparedness for careers in biomedical and behavioral research. NIGMS is particularly interested in those interventions that are specifically designed to increase the number of students from underrepresented groups entering careers in these disciplines. The proposed research need not be restricted to underrepresented students. The focus of this RFP is to promote the development or improvement in technology for management of this pest. Preference will be given to those proposals that are focused on biological control, development of resistant host trees, and improvements in survey technology. Secondarily, other areas of proposed investigations will be consid- ered, such as development of regulatory treatments, pesticides, strategies to slow or stop the spread, and strategies to exploit the behavior or biology of these insects to lower populations and lessen damage. The IPM Centers will promote the development and implementation of IPM by facilitating collaboration across states, disciplines, and purposes. They will serve as focal points for regional pest management information networks, collaborative team building, and broad-based stakeholder participation. The end result will be increased coordination of IPM research, education and extension efforts and enhanced responsiveness to critical, priority pest management and global food security challenges. This program is designed to encourage innovations in the digital humanities. By awarding relatively small grants to support the planning stages, NEH aims to encourage the development of innovative projects that promise to benefit the humanities. Digital Humanities Start-Up Grants may involve research that brings new approaches or documents best practices in the study of the digital humanities, planning and developing prototypes of new digital tools for preserving, analyzing and making accessible digital resources, including libraries and museum digital assets, scholarship or studies that examine the philosophical or practical implications and impact of the use of emerging technologies in specific field or disciplines of the humanities, or in interdisciplinary collaborations involving several fields or disciplines; innovative uses of technology for public programming and education utilizing both traditional and new media; and new digi- A weekly publication of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs. This course will encourage undergraduates and teachers to grapple with a fundamental question addressed by the humanities, and to join together in a deep and sustained program of reading in order to encounter influential thinkers over the centuries and into the present day. The course is to be developed by one or more (up to four) faculty members, but not team taught. Enduring Questions courses must be taught from a common syllabus and must be offered during the grant period at least twice by each faculty member involved in developing the course. 20110915-AQ (GG 7/14/11) URL: http://www.neh.gov/grants/ guidelines/EnduringQuestions.html Deadline: 9/15/2011 EDUCATION 27-8 Arts in Education National Program (ED) The Arts in Education National Program supports national level high-quality arts education projects and programs for children and youth, with special emphasis on serving students from low-income families and students with disabilities. These processes are central to the chemical, biochemical, materials, energy, and pharmaceutical industries. A fundamental understanding of the interfacial, transport, and thermodynamic behavior of multiphase chemical systems as well as quantitative descriptions of processing characteristics in the process-oriented industries is critical for efficient resource management and effective environmental protection. The program encourages proposals that address emerging research areas and technologies, have a high degree of interdisciplinary thought coupled with knowledge creation, and integrate education and research. Francis Fellowship Program (FFF) The fellowship is intended to support the development of outstanding investigators who plan careers in pulmonary research. The foundation seeks to help them as they make the transition to independent, selfsupporting, faculty members. Fellowship grants are awarded to institutions for the purpose of providing stipends, fringe benefits, and modest travel expenses in support of qualified post-doctoral fellows or newly appointed assistant professors. Award recipients will thereby be enabled to devote the major part of their professional effort to research related to pulmonary disease and lung biology. Each department may submit only one application annually. The program is intended to shed light on the overarching issues of how human hosts handle infectious challenge. Candidates will generally have an M.D., D.V.M., or Ph.D. degree. BWF particularly encourages human health-relevant applications from veterinary scientists. Candidates must have an established record of independent research and hold a tenure-track position as an assistant professor or equivalent (at the time of application) at a degree-granting institution. A U.S. or Canadian institution- including its medical school, graduate schools, and all affiliated hospitals and research institutes- may nominate up to two candidates. The foundation specifically supports research in the U.S. and its territories that focuses on social policy objectives; institutional and educational practices; legislative and regulatory changes; linguistic issues (e.g., literacy, language loss and maintenance, language policy, language and national security, bilingualism, language and gender, language and law, language disabilities, language and health, language and education, different language cultures); and development of community capacity and organization of previously unorganized groups. The foundation supports projects that address institutional rather than individual or behavioral change. It seeks to fund research and initiatives that provide insight into sociological and linguistic issues that may be useful to specific groups and or communities.
