Research in biometrics—methods to automatically recognize individuals based upon one or more unique physical or behavioral trait—has been historically conducted by the information technology community but this solicitation seeks to significantly improve the performance or application of biometrics by encouraging new cross-discipline research collaborations. Specifically, the S&T Directorate seeks proposals that will significantly advance the performance or application of biometrics in DHS’s mission and its component agencies’ operations through cross-discipline collaboration including, but not limited to, basic research into: 1) The role of human identity in security; 2) The acceptability and usability of biometrics in DHS’ applications; 3) The forensic proof of automated biometric systems; and 4) The acquisition of useful biometric samples independent of the environment. The NIH expects that such programs will: help attract young students to careers in science; provide opportunities for college students to gain valuable research experience to help prepare them for graduate school; and enhance the skills of science teachers and enable them to more effectively communicate the nature of the scientific process to their students. The programs would also contribute to enhancing overall science literacy. The successful management of pest problems in commercial production is facing severe challenges due to regulatory changes, emergence of new pest problems, and the development of pest resistance to present management technologies. The greatest impact on current management technologies is in the production of specialty crops; however, other crops, including grain, forage and fiber, as well as animal health, are also being impacted by these changes. The purpose of this program is to fund projects that will enhance the ability of producers and processors who have already adopted organic standards to grow and market high quality organic agricultural products. Priority concerns include biological, physical, and social sciences, including economics. The OREI is particularly interested in projects that emphasize research and outreach that assist farmers and ranchers with whole farm planning, especially those relating to climate change. Investigations of effects on both managed and natural environments are relevant. The BRAG program accomplishes its purpose by providing Federal regulatory agencies with scientific information relevant to regulatory issues.
