Scoring Rubric
Graduate Writing Requirement, M.A. in Communication
In accordance with requirements of the State of California, students must demonstrate
competence in written English before they apply for advancement to candidacy. The
student’s writing should demonstrate correct and effective style and format, mechanics,
content and organization. Students must earn at least a 3 (Satisfactory) on the scoring
rubric in all three areas. If a reader assigns a score below a 3 on any of the categories, the
reader will specify what the student needs to do to receive a passing score.
