RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF SENATE BILL 1105 (ACCESS TO ONLINE VOTER REGISTRATION) WHEREAS, Associated Students, Inc. is the recognized student body government of California State University, Fresno; and WHEREAS, It is the mission of ASI to provide a means for effective student participation in the governance of the University, foster awareness of student opinions on campus issues, assist in the protection of student rights, and provide programs and services to meet the needs of the students and campus community; and WHEREAS, Increasing political participation among students has been an integral part of ASI, especially during election cycles; and WHEREAS, A major cause behind lack of participation among young people is registration huddles, and WHEREAS, SB 1105 would require the standardized student financial aid application, if the application is submitted online, to permit the applicant to apply to register to vote online by submitting an affidavit of registration electronically on the Internet Web site of the Secretary of State; and WHEREAS, Tens of thousands of college students apply for their FAFSA each spring; and WHEREAS, By providing a link to the Secretary of State’s voter registration page, FAFSA provides more opportunity for college students to register to vote; and therefore be it RESOLVED, That ASI recognizes SB 1105 as an important step to increasing political participation among students; and be it RESOLVED, That ASI calls on members of the California Senate and Assembly to pass SB 1105; and be it RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be distributed widely, to the following (but not limited to); The Fresno Bee, the Collegian, Senator Tom Berryhill, Senator Andy Vidak, Assemblyman Patterson, Assemblyman Perea, Assemblyman Bigelow, and Assemblywoman Conway.
