Davey, Secretary & CEO Frank DePaola, Highway Division Administrator Ongoing Work in the MHS Tunnels January 31, 2014 To follow is a summary of maintenance and construction activities performed last week in the Metropolitan Highway System tunnels. Overnight work: • • • • • • • Contractors are repairing water infiltration at multiple points within the O’Neill Tunnel (both directions) and on related ramps. In addition, a team is inspecting and repairing the fireproofing material in various areas where water infiltration repairs are underway. Water infiltration repair work is also underway in the I-90 Connector Tunnel (both directions) and the Ted Williams Tunnel Eastbound. A contractor, working on behalf of Boston Properties, owner of the Prudential Center, is continuing ceiling repairs in the Prudential Tunnel (both directions). Completion of that project is imminent. The most recent repairs are focused on the Eastern end of the tunnel. A contractor is also preparing to remove the ceiling in the portion of the Prudential Tunnel (both directions) that passes under the Hynes Convention Center. A contractor is surveying soil settlement around the I-90 Connector Tunnel near South Station. This survey work is part of an ongoing effort to monitor soil that was previously frozen during construction of that tunnel. Last week’s effort completed the latest survey. MassDOT workers performed a cable pull in the I-93 Northbound Tunnel, in preparation for fiber-optic cable installation. MassDOT workers replaced a display board in a Variable Message Sign on Ramp CN-SA (I-93 Northbound, Exit 23, Government Center).
