MEMORANDUM TO: FR: RE: DA: Richard A. Davey, Secretary & CEO Frank DePaola, Highway Division Administrator Ongoing Work in the MHS Tunnels June 7, 2013 To follow is a summary of maintenance and construction activities performed last week in the Metropolitan Highway System tunnels. Please feel free to contact me if you need additional information. Overnight work: • • • • • • • • After a contractor milled and paved the Copley Square Exit (Exit 22) from the Prudential Tunnel Eastbound, the contractor is now in the process of installing elastomeric concrete, an elastic grouting product, around the roadway drain inlets. The contractor is also installing expansion joint material in the area. A contractor is doing preparatory work for roadway repairs in the Ted Williams Tunnel (both directions). The roadway repairs are necessary because of water infiltration. Preliminary work includes soundings of the concrete to determine the affected areas of the roadway. Contractors are also repairing water infiltration at multiple points within the O’Neill Tunnel (both directions) and on related ramps. Recent work has concentrated on the Northbound side of the tunnel. While the contractor repairs areas on the Northbound side, another contracting crew is in the area performing a routine inspection. A contractor is performing routine inspections of the I-93 Northbound Tunnel, the I-93 Southbound Tunnel, a portion of the Zakim Bridge, the I-90 Connector Tunnel (both directions) and the Prudential Tunnel Eastbound. A contractor is also inspecting the HOV Tunnel. A private contractor, working on behalf of Boston Properties, the owner of the Prudential Center, is continuing ceiling repairs in the Prudential Tunnel Westbound. A contractor is continuing to pull-test the ceiling anchors in the Ted Williams Tunnel (both directions). The contractor has begun installation of a supplemental ceiling hanger system. The contractor is also making any necessary adjustments to the installed supplemental hangers. Substructure repair work in the Storrow Tunnel Westbound has resumed after a winter layoff. Recent work includes installation of wiring for the new lighting system, curb grouting and sidewalk installation. MassDOT cleaned trench drains in the vicinity of Ramp T-L (Tobin Bridge to Rutherford Avenue). • • • MassDOT closed Ramp A (South Boston Bypass Road to I-90 Eastbound) to take preliminary microsilica soundings as part of a larger project to repair the wearing surface of the roadway in that area. MassDOT closed lanes in the I-90 Westbound Tunnel so that workers could perform a walk-through in preparation for future construction work in the area. MassDOT performed routine maintenance, monitoring and calibration of the recently installed carbon monoxide monitors in the Prudential Tunnel (both directions).
